Introduction to 3D Printing
3D Printing, also referred as Additive manufacturing, is a
process of making 3-dimensional objects, layer by layer
from a digital model using various materials.

To print a 3d model, you have to go through 4 steps:

1. Modelling or CAD
2. Slicing
3. Printing
4. Post Processing
1. Computer Aided Design (CAD):
The first process of 3d printing is making a digital design
of the model, using CAD software like Blender, AutoCAD
etc. , which is then exported in STL (Standard Tessellation
Language) or OBJ format.

2. Slicing The Model:

The exported digital design is then passed to the slicing
software like Cura or PrusaSlicer which slices the design
in 2D layers. Now this sliced model is converted to G-
code, which are the set of instructions to the printer that
how to move and when to exclude filament.
3. Printing the Object:
Printer then uses that sliced file and starts
constructing the model layer by layer using plastic
filament or resin. This process is what we call
additive manufacturing.

4. Post Processing:
It's the last step of refining the model by
removing extra materials like supports, sanding,
painting and polishing for smoothness. For resin-
based prints, the model is solidified with UV light.
Types of 3D Printing
1. FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling):
 It heats the Plastic filament and deposits.
 Affordable and common technology.

2.SLA (Stereolithography):
 It uses UV light to cure Liquid resin.
 High precision and smooth finish.

3. SLS (Selective Laser Sintering):

 It uses Laser to sinter powdered material.
 Best for complex shapes and industrial use.
Materials used in 3D Printing

1. Plastics: PLA, ABS, PETG (common consumer products)

2. Metals: Titanium, aluminum (aerospace, automotive).
3. Ceramics: Heat-resistant materials for industrial use.
4. Resins: Photopolymer for SLA printing.
5. Biomaterials: Living cells (organ printing).
6. Composites: Carbon fiber, glass fiber.
Applications of 3D Printing

1. Healthcare:
3d printers allows creation of custom prosthetics, implants and Artificial Organs
and tissues, offering hope for organ transplantation.
2. Aerospace And Automotive:
In aerospace light weight parts are created using 3d printers for planes, vehicles
and satellites.
3. Construction:
In construction 3d printing is used for constructing fast and efficient houses and
structures, reducing material waste.
Case Studies:
1. In 2016, Dubai revolutionized 3d printing
by constructing the first ever 3d printed
office named the Office Of The Future.

2. GE Aviation’s LEAP engine uses 3D-

printed fuel nozzles, 25% lighter and
5x more durable than traditional ones.

3. In 2018, a 3D-printed Jaw was

successfully implanted in a patient in Belgium.
The jaw was created using the patient’s 3D
scan.
Conclusion

In conclusion 3d printing is a revolutionizing technology which has transformed

the way we design and manufacture. It has limitless possibilities and application,
from medical to industrial to educational sector. With the help of a 3d printer we
can turn our ideas into reality.
