FORMAL GROUPS
These are the type of work groups
created by the organization and have
designated work assignments and
rooted tasks.
The behavior of such groups is
directed toward achieving
organizational goals.

FORMAL GROUPS
Are groups established by an organization
to perform an assigned task, have a public
identity, and a goal to achieve. Members of
this group perform tasks together as part of
their job assignments and are referred to as
a team. The formal organization prescribes
the lines of communication and authority
in the formal group.

• Examples: project teams, committees,


board of directors, departamental
teams, human resource teams,
customer service teams, etc.

INFORMAL GROUP
Are formed based on common interests,
friendships, and proximity (or out of
social needs). The emphasis within the
informal organization is on people and
their relationships. Power in an
informal organization is not delegated
by managers, but it is granted by group
members.

Examples: friendship circles,


lunch groups, book clubs, social
media groups, sports enthusiast

Act 3: Picture Relay
Directions: Form a line with equal members. The first member in the
line will see the picture of a specific scenario and relay it to the next member
by describing it until it reaches the last one. The last member from each
group who taps the table first will have the chance to tell the answer if the
scenario is a formal or an informal group. Group members should not
mention the word “Formal” or “Informal”. The group who will get the highest
score will win and will receive 10 points. The group to finish second will get 5
points and other groups will receive 3 points.
Act 4: Quiz
Directions: On a ¼ sheet of paper, answer FG if the scenario
shows a Formal Group or IG if the scenario shows an Informal
Group.
1. Employees who are assigned to work together on a specific project under the supervision of a project

2. A group of colleagues who regularly gather after work for a book club, discussing various novels and
literature.
3. A team of software developers reporting directly to the Head of the IT Department to work on a new
software project.
4. A group of friends at the workplace who share common interests in photography and organize photo
walks during weekends.
5. An assembly line team in a manufacturing plant, with each member having a designated role and
reporting to a team leader.
6. Employees who form a running club meet every morning before work to jog together, promoting a healthy
lifestyle.
7. A committee established by the management to oversee the planning and execution of the annual
company retreat.
8. A group of colleagues who, out of their shared love for gardening, regularly exchange tips and seeds to
enhance their office garden.
9. A departmental team responsible for handling day-to-day operations, adhering to the organizational
hierarchy and reporting structure.
10. A group of employees who connect on a social media platform to discuss and share information about
industry trends and innovations.

Assignment:
Directions: Using your smartphones, make a personal vlog
sharing your experience/s as a part of a formal or in an informal
group and how does it affect your behavior as a person. Send it to
the class group chat. To those who do not have smartphones,
write your experience/s on a 1 whole sheet of paper with 250
words.
