Day 1

Nowadays, 8 out 10 people

prefer using different kinds of
technology for
communicating, sharing,
learning, and viewing through
online. Are you one of them?
Online information is the contents of the web, contents of the internet,
and contents of an online network.
Is it important to compare and contrast the information that we get
online?
An important skill within reading or even viewing is being able to
compare and contrast. It helps us organize information more efficiently
and it is an important skill in our daily lives. What do compare and
contrast mean?
To compare means to identify similarities between two or more things.
Signal words such as also, too, similarly, alike, both, and in the same way
are commonly used to compare. To contrast means to identify
differences. The words or phrases that are used to contrast are but,
however, differ, in contrast, different, and on the other hand..
From the different online information,
updates, and news that we
viewed through the different social
media sites about a pandemic and
epidemic, we were able to gather
important information for us to better
understand the similarities and
differences between the two.
To compare and
contrast pandemic and epidemic.
A Venn diagram is a useful tool to help organize
similarities and differences. You write the
similarities or the comparison in the
overlapping part of the circle and the
differences are in each portion of the circle. We
might note that pandemic and epidemic both
put people’s lives at risk, cause death, and affect
the economy.

As for differences or contrast, pandemic is a

worldwide spread of disease however epidemic
is a disease spread within the community or
region.
Example of diseases that are considered as pandemic
are Ebola, Spanish flu, and now the Covid-19, on the
other hand, SARS, Malaria, and Meningococcemia are
examples of epidemic diseases. During a pandemic
there is a long-term impact in the global economy
while during an epidemic, the impact in the economy
in specific region or country is considered short-term
specially if there’s a collaboration between the
government and the health sector.

We often get information from viewing specially

through online. we must be aware that not all
information from online is reliable. Therefore,
comparing and contrasting is a must.
Directions: Tell whether each sentence is comparing or
contrasting two things. Write the word compare or
contrast on each line.
