Simple Past

I. How to change to questions (interrogative):

she Did + subject + base form of the verb +?

i. Did is used with all pronouns ( whether the noun is singular or plural)

Ex: Did Mary change her job?


Did she change her job?
Did Mary and Peter change their jobs?
Did they change their jobs?

ii. What is meant by “ base form of the verb”?


It is the infinitive / original verb that takes neither s, es, ies, or –d , ed, ied,
or –ing or its irregular past form.
Ex: change sleep study
draw eat cut
Ex: Circle the base forms of the given verbs:

ate sang gives buy move

working try sing bought

Change the following to questions ( the interrogative form):

II. How to change to negative. did not = didn’t

Subject + did + not + base form of the verb

All pronouns / singular and plural nouns take did when changing to negative.
Example:

 The builder built a beautiful mansion.


 The builder didn’t build a beautiful mansion.

 The students arrived late to school.


 The students didn’t arrive late to school.
