    Anatomical position
    Anatomical position, is that of the body
    standing upright, with the feet at shoulder width
    and parallel, toes forward.
    Directional Terms
     Anterior (or ventral) : front.
     Posterior (or dorsal) : back.
     Superior (or cranial) : toward the head end of the body; upper.
     Inferior (or caudal) :away from the head; lower .
     Lateral :away from the midline of the body.
     Medial: toward the midline of the body.
     Proximal: toward or nearest the trunk or the point of origin of a part.
     Distal: away from or farthest from the trunk or the point or origin of a part.
     Superficial : towards the surface of an organ or the body.
     Deep: towards the center of an organ or the body .
    Directional Terms
    Body Planes

    1. Sagittal plane divides the body or an organ


    vertically into right & left sides. If this vertical
    2. Frontal plane (Coronal plane) divides the
    body or an organ into anterior (front) &
    posterior (rear) portions.
    3. Transverse plane (Cross sectional plane)
    divides the body or organ horizontally into
    upper & lower portions
    Body Planes
    Named markings in the bone
    A. Lines, ridges, or crests.
    B. Rounded elevations :
    1) Tuberosity; trochanter - large, rounded.
    2) Tubercle – small.
    3) Protuberance – swelling.
    4) Malleolus - mallet-like.
    C. Spines or processes - sharp elevations.
    D. Fossae, notches, grooves - depressions along
    bones.
    Named markings in the bone

    E. Foramina - holes in bones.


    F. Canals - tunnels in bones.
    G. Meatuses - canals which do not go clear through
    a bone.
    H. Heads; condyles - articular ends of bone.
    I. Epicondyles - elevations just proximal to condyle.
