What Lost Identity?

The Diaspora and Globalisation

-Abdalhadi Alijla

By Biraj Shrestha
Introduction of the author

• Name : Abdalhadi Alijla

• Abdalhadi Alijla is a Palestinian author, researcher, and academic specializing in diaspora studies,
particularly focusing on the Palestinian diaspora. He holds a Ph.D. in human geography from the
University of Exeter. Alijla's work explores themes of identity, displacement, and cultural preservation
within the context of globalization. He has conducted extensive research on the experiences of
Palestinians living in Europe, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities faced by diasporic
communities in maintaining their cultural heritage while navigating transnational spaces.
• The lesson "What Lost Identity? The Diaspora and Globalization" is all about how people from different cultures move
around the world and how they deal with it. It talks about how they try to keep their identity and culture while also fitting
into new places. It's like when someone from one country moves to another country and tries to keep their traditions alive
while also learning new things from the new place. So, the lesson looks at how people keep their sense of who they are while
being part of a bigger, more connected world.
Defining Globalization and Diaspora

• Globalization is like when things from one part of the world are connected to things from another part of the world. It's
about how countries, people, and businesses are linked together through things like trade, technology, and culture. So,
it's like when you can eat food from different countries in your own town, or when you can talk to someone on the other
side of the world instantly using your phone.

Hhuugroup or community move away from their original homeland and settle in
• Diaspora is when people from one particular
other parts of the world. It's like when a group of people leaves their country because of reasons like war, persecution,
or seeking better opportunities elsewhere. Diaspora communities often maintain a strong connection to their cultural
roots and heritage, even if they're living far away from their homeland. So
Key points of this lesson
• Most of the 5 million Palestinians are refugees. More than two million live in Western Europe and North America.
They left Palestine and the refugee camps where they were denied basic human rights to find a better life and better
economic opportunities. Most North African Arabs (Egyptians, Moroccans, Tunisians, and Algerians) left their home
countries to look for a better economic life. However, Syrian and Lebanese nationals left their countries not only to
improve their economic situation but also to escape from the ravages of the ongoing conflicts there.

• Personally, I believe that no institution, government, group or people can clinically separate the young generations
from the huge waves of technological advancement that shape and form this global culture, which is, after all, part of
our new global identity.

• In the 21st century, social media, street journalism, and global corporations play significant roles in shaping global
culture. However, while cultural identity can be defined by factors like religion, culture, or language, it's essential not
to confuse it with the broader concept of global culture.

• Immigration poses economic challenges for both newcomers and host nations, especially in regions like Western
Europe and North America. Successful integration into the labor market requires a gradual process, starting with
language learning and cultural adaptation, leading to eventual employment opportunities.
• Globalization has had a profound impact on diaspora communities around the world. As borders have become more porous
and technology has enabled increased connectivity, diaspora communities have experienced both benefits and challenges in
adapting to this new global landscape.

• IImmigrant entrepreneurs boost economic growth by starting businesses and promoting trade between their home and host
countries. This has expanded product diversity in European markets, such as the demand for Indian spices in Saudi Arabia due
to the large Indian population. Similarly, trade between Turkey and Germany has thrived, attracting many German tourists to
Turkey. Despite challenges, immigrants are eager to integrate into Swedish and Spanish societies.

• Immigrant enclaves in Western societies initially promote shared identity and culture but can lead to long-term problems for
the second generation and strain on government resources. Integration programs fail not because immigrants resist but due to
societal barriers. Despite initial costs, full integration is crucial for the future. Efforts like teaching Arabic in Swedish schools
show progress. Integration brings economic opportunities and adaptation to new norms and standards.

• The new generation of immigrants will have the chance to access opportunities for education, engagement, and self-esteem,
helping bridge cultural and religious divides with mutual understanding. Receiving countries will benefit economically from
the increasing presence of immigrants, leading to enhanced economic, political, and cultural interactions between both sides.
Governments in Europe and North America should prioritize integration programs that encourage immigrants to establish
businesses linking them to their homelands. This approach facilitates smoother integration and economic contribution.

• If we don't embrace global culture, it could overtake us without us realizing it. Isolation and non-convergence are costlier than
integration. The fear of losing identity should be countered with positive interactions between newcomers and host societies.
Immigrants are guests who should leave a positive impression or become part of society, adapting and building their future
alongside their new surroundings.
Conclusion: Globalization and Diaspora

In conclusion, the dynamics of globalization and diaspora present both challenges and
opportunities for individuals and societies alike. While globalization facilitates cultural
exchange and economic growth, it also poses risks of identity loss and social isolation.
However, embracing diversity and fostering integration can lead to mutual
understanding, economic prosperity, and social cohesion.
Governments and societies must prioritize inclusive policies and initiatives to ensure that
immigrants are welcomed, integrated, and empowered to contribute positively to their
new communities. By recognizing the benefits of cultural exchange and collaboration,
we can build a more interconnected and resilient global society for generations to come.
