Climate Change

Myth or Reality
Climate Change
• Climate change is a long-term change in the
average weather patterns that have come to
define Earth's local, regional and global
climates.
• Global warming causes climate change, which
poses a serious threat to life on Earth in the
forms of widespread flooding and extreme
weather.
• 5 main effects of climate change they are more
frequent and intense drought, storms, heat
waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and
warming oceans can directly harm animals,
destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc
on people's livelihoods and communities.
Evidence of Climate Change
• Global temperature is rising
• The ocean is getting warmer
• The Ice sheets are shrinking
• Glaciers are retreating
• Snow cover is decreasing
• Sea level is rising
• Arctic sea ice is declining
• Extreme events are increasing in frequency
• Ocean acidification is increasing
Temperature trends over the years

• Globally, there has been a clear

upward trend in temperatures over
the past century. Data shows that
each decade since the 1970s has
been warmer than the previous one,
with 2010-2019 being the warmest
decade on record. This warming
trend is primarily attributed to human
activities, such as the burning of
fossil fuels and deforestation, leading
to an increase in greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere
Human activities and greenhouse gases
• Burning fossil fuels, releasing chemicals
into the atmosphere, reducing the
amount of forest cover, and the rapid
expansion of farming, development, and
industrial activities are releasing carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere and
changing the balance of the climate
system.
• Many of these greenhouse gases occur
naturally, but human activities are
increasing the concentrations of some of
them in the atmosphere, in particular:
• carbon dioxide (CO2)
• methane
• nitrous oxide
• fluorinated gases
Impact on Ecosystems:

• The main direct cause of

biodiversity loss is land use
change (primarily for large-scale
food production) which drives an
estimated 30% of biodiversity
decline globally. Second is
overexploitation (overfishing,
overhunting and overharvesting)
for things like food, medicines
and timber which drives around
20%.
Disruption of ecosystems and habitats

The result is global warming is

water shortage, extinction of
species, etc. These impacts every
living thing on the planet, which
includes us. The impact of
ecosystem destruction will be felt
by everything eventually.
Impact on Weather patterns

As Earth’s climate changes, it is impacting

extreme weather across the planet. Record-
breaking heat waves on land and in the ocean,
drenching rains, severe floods, years-long
droughts, extreme wildfires, and widespread
flooding during hurricanes are all becoming
more frequent and more intense.
Global warming vs Natural climate

“Global warming” refers to the rise in

global temperatures due mainly to the
increasing concentrations of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The earth's climate is influenced and
changed through natural causes like
volcanic eruptions, ocean currents, the
Earth's orbital changes, solar
variations and internal variability.
Volcanic eruptions - The main effect
volcanoes have on the climate.
Consequences for human health due to climate
change

– The health effects of these disruptions include increased

respiratory and cardiovascular disease, injuries and premature
deaths related to extreme weather events, changes in the
prevalence and geographical distribution of food- and water-
borne illnesses and other infectious diseases, and threats to
mental health.
The role of Individuals to reduce “Carbon
footprint”
• Stop buying your water in plastic
• Incorporate walking or biking to some of your regular short-trip
destination
• Turn off lights and unplug devices when you’re not using them.
• Eat more food that is grown or made locally and less red meat
• Use alternative transportation (bus, train, carpool, or bike) to get to
work one day per week
• Keep the tires on your car properly inflated and get regular tune-ups
Conclusion

• In conclusion, climate change is the

most significant problem facing the
world. Global warming is increasing
day by day. If we cannot prevent it as
soon as possible, our world will face
undesirable consequences.
