Serial killer
murdered 5 prostitutes
East End of London (Whitechapel
district)
1888.

The name was first used in a

letter written by an individual
claiming to be the killer.
Killings took place within
a mile area (1.6km)
involving districts of

Whitechapel,
Spitalfields,
Aldgate,
City of London.
Was also known as the Whitechapel
Murderer and “Leather Apron.”
The Ripper was the

first
serial killer in a
major modern city
with an educated populace.

The Ripper
is he terrified a city
by leaving his
famous? grossly mutilated victims
in
plain sight.

The Ripper was never caught.

Crimes were well documented
by the police and the press.
Newspapers were cheap,
meaning many were able to access the news.
The Ripper appeared during a time of political turmoil and social unrest.
Dear Boss
I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me
just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about
being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me
real fits. I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do
get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to
squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to
start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I
saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the
last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. Red
ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the
ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn’t
you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out
straight. My knife’s so nice and sharp I want to get to work right
away if I get a chance. Good luck.
Yours truly
Jack the Ripper
Who were the Ripper’s Victims?
It is generally agreed that the Ripper killed 5 women but
some claim the number may be 11 or even more.

5 victims worked as
prostitutes
killed between August and
November 1888.

It was thought each of the

victims was drunk at the time
of their murder.
The Ripper’s
Victims

The Canonical 5
1. Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols, murdered Friday, August 31, 1888.
2. Annie Chapman, murdered Saturday, September 8, 1888.
3. Elizabeth Stride, murdered Sunday, September 30, 1888.
4. Catharine Eddowes, also murdered that same date.
5. Mary Jane Kelly, murdered Friday, November 9, 1888.

Autopsies of the victims support this cause of death.

It has been claimed that the killer had a reasonable

The Letters
It is agreed by most, but not all, that all the letters claimed to
have been written by the Ripper were probably hoaxes.

APK
Prince Albert Victor
the Duke of Clarence
Queen Victoria’s grandchild
low IQ
Had syphilis which drove him insane
subsequent imprisonment and died in an asylum in 1892

Apparently the Royal Family knew that he was the murderer

Records suggest he died of the flu

Although argued he died of
"softening of the brain"
in a private mental hospital in Sandringham.
Joseph Barnett
A fish porter at Billingsgate Market who knew Mary Jane Kelly quite well.

The theory goes that …

Barnett deeply loved Mary
he committed the first murders to keep her off the street
and turned on her when that failed.

Interestingly, his physical appearance and psychological profile closely match those
of witnesses and the FBI psychological profile.

October 30th, 1888: Barnett and Kelly have a quarrel at 13 Miller's

Court, during which a window is broken and Joseph leaves to take up
lodgings in Bishopsgate. It is alleged that the quarrel arose because
Kelly was allowing a prostitute to share their lodgings.
Michael Ostrog
Russian has been seen as two very different possible
persons

on the one hand

Assistant Crime Commissioner called him

“mad Russian doctor…and unquestionably a

homicidal maniac,”

BUT
records show him only as a petty criminal
who once threatened the police with a revolver but was arrested.
Lewis Carroll
The theory that famous author Lewis Carroll was Jack
the Ripper was published in

1996
But there is no evidence at all –
anywhere
Carroll did make reference to the Ripper once in his
private diary, discussing, “his very ingenious theory
about ‘Jack the Ripper’” – a theory yet to be found.
Dr. T. Neill Cream
A Scottish doctor,
Abortionist and lady-killer

poisoned one of his patients and blamed the pharmacist

Good behaviour got him out of prison early

but he could not stop the murders.

Murdered Matilda Clover

and as he hung
he said three words

“I am Jack.”
However, the style of the murders
(and the fact that he was in prison when they were committed)
makes this theory rather sketchy.
WHY?
It is difficult to catch a serial killer
who does not want to be caught

1880s
forensic science was in its infancy

The basic tools of modern

criminology (finger printing,
blood typing, DNA) were
unavailable to the
investigators.
WHY?
The Ripper attacked at times when the
streets were
largely deserted
and chose
victims who were usually
drunk
and defenseless.

Attacked swiftly leaving little time for him to

be caught.
He also managed to leave the scene
without witnesses or leaving any
evidence as to his identity.
What do
you think?
Write a short paragraph
discussing who you think Jack
the Ripper is and why.
Please rate your effort and understanding.

Goal Reflection
I can examine popular ‘Ripper’ suspects.
