A CVC word is made up of
consonant, vowel, and consonant
sounds.
Direction: Look at the pictures and choose the
word that describes it.

Identify each of the following and write the missing sound.
Match the words with the pictures.
We have learned that reading is an important
skill every child must acquire and CVC words
are integral part to any pre – reading program.
After knowing the letter sounds, there goes
sounding out simple CVC words. It is important
to note that we must clearly say the sound of
every letter of the English alphabet.
Best of Friends
Ben and Ted are best of friends. There are lots of
things they like to do together. Drawing things is
one of their hobbies. Ben uses his red pen in
drawing his favorite pet, while Ted uses his ten
colored crayons in drawing his toy jet.
They share their things to each other, too. They
also like to play in the park. One day while
playing, a boy with a wounded leg, begs for
their help, for he had fallen from a tree.
The two boys helped him at once. Ted
comforted the boy, while Ben immediately
called for help.
1. Who are best of friends?
2. What do they like to do together?
3. What are the things they used in drawing?
4. What happened one day as they play in the

5. If you were Ben and Ted, what will you do to

What do you notice with the words?
These are CVC words with short vowel /e/.
Give me other examples of CVC words with
short vowel /e/. How are we going to read
words with short /e/?
Here are examples of short e
sound in CVC pattern.
Ben jet wed
bet keg Ren
beg red pet
bed sem peg
web Jen led
hem net
Den leg
In order to read them, we are going to sound
each letter of the word, then we will blend each
sound just like
/b/+ /e/+/n/=Ben.
Another example is
/p/ + /e/ + /n/ = pen
The letter i is a vowel whose short sound is sounded as
“ih”. The short I sound is used in some words with the
consonant- vowel- consonant pattern (CVC) such as
wig, dig, lit, sit, did, lid, bib and rib.

Today, we are going to look at one of the sounds
that "a" makes. We are going to learn about some
words that have the short "a" sound.

Here are some pictures which have the short "a"


sound.
The vowel in the middle of these words is the
vowel “a”. Let’s sound out the vowel “a”: /ah/
/ah/ /ah/. Let us spell the word bat: b-a-t bat. The
sound of “a“ in the word “bat” is /ah/.
The second word is cap. Let us spell the word
cap: c-a-p cap. The sound of “a” in the word
“cap” is /ah/. And the last word is ram: r-a-m
ram. The sound of “a” in the word “ham” is
/ah/.
Let’s read another set of words.

4. The sad lad has a bag.
5. Bat cat ran after the rat.
6. Ban the ram from the dam.

different short vowel sounds in a CVC

game.
CVC pattern stands for consonant-vowel
consonant pattern.
Here are some good examples of words with
short vowel /o/ in a CVC pattern
1. The log house is on the hill.
In this sentence what word has the short /o/ sound?

It is log. The word log starts with the consonant letter


l followed by a middle short vowel letter o and a
consonant letter g. The short vowel o is sounded as
/o/
2. She draws a cute pink hog as her favorite animal.
How about in sentence number two. Which word has the
short /o/ sound?
The word is hog. Say the word again. (hog)

3. Jason carefully removes the boiling water from the pot.
