RECAP
We have learned that each of the letters has different sounds. Now, let us
refresh our minds with the sound of the letters. As I sing and say the letter, you
will produce the sound it makes. Are you ready?
The b says /b/
The b says /b/
Every letter makes a sound
The b says /b/

(Use consonant letters P, T, S, and F in the song)

LESSON
Alphabet letters produce different sounds. A sound can be short or long.
The vowels in the alphabet are the letters A, E, I, O, U. Let us read these words
phonetically and pay attention to the middle sound.

bag bib

pen hen
cat
pin
pan

The middle sound of bag is /a/; the middle sound of pen is /e/; the middle
sound of cat is /a/; the middle sound of pan is /a/; the middle sound of bib is /i/;
the middle sound of hen is /e/; and the middle sound of pin is /i/.

If you spell the words, you need to consider the sound of each letter in the
word.

Today, let us talk about words with short vowel e, a, and i in

Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (C-V-C) pattern.

1) The sound of short e vowel is /e/ (eh).

Let’s read the following words.

wet set hen pen red led leg

pet ten wed fed keg beg
jet men bed peg
net vet den

These words are examples of short e middle vowel sound. The sound of
short e is /e/(eh).

2) The sound of short a vowel is /a/ (ah).

Let’s look at the pictures and read the following words.
bat rat ham ram

mat hat jam dam

cat fat yam

can ran map dad

fan pan cap pad

van man nap sad

These are examples of words with short a middle vowel sound.

The sound of short a is /a/ (ah).

3) The sound of short i vowel is /i/ (ih).

Let’s read the following words.

bib pig dig pin dip kit

rib gig tin fin lip pit
nib jig win hip lit
fib sip bit

These words are examples of short i middle vowel sound.

The short sound of vowel i is /i/ (ih).
Guided Practice
Tell whether each set of words has short vowel /e/ sound or not.
jet let bed pen

You’re right! The first set of C-V-C words has short vowel /e/ middle sound.

bed keg pet ten

Correct! The second set of C-V-C words has short vowel /e/ middle sound.

men man fed fin

This set of words does not have the short /e/ middle vowel sound. If your
answer is the same, then you are correct! That is because man has a short /a/
middle vowel sound, while fin has short /i/ middle vowel sound.

Now, let’s do another set of exercise. All the names of the pictures have
short /a/ middle vowel sound. Draw a happy face if the picture has its correct
name, if not, draw a sad face and change the name to make it correct.

fan

You’re right! The picture matched with its correct name with a short
/a/.

map
If you wrote a happy face, you’re correct. The picture also matched to its correct
name. What about the next one?

hat

Very Good! The picture does not match its name. So, you need to change the
word hat to cat.

ham

If you drew a sad face, you’re absolutely right. The picture does not match its
name. So, you need to change the word ham to pad. You should always be
familiar with the name of the things around you.

Now, let’s do an exercise for short /i/ sound. Listen as each phrase is read. If
you hear a word that has short vowel /i/, clap your hands.

a pin in the kit

If you clapped your hands for the words pin, in, and kit, you’re right.

fin of the fish

If you clapped your hands for the words fin and fish, you’re right. tip of the
hill

If you clapped your hands for the words tip and hill, you are correct.
