Factors of Innovation
5. Development and use of more effective and efficient cutting tools,
types and material such as HSS, carbides, etc.
3
Classification of
Machine Tools
1. According to primary machining operations
2. According to nature of cutting motion
3. According to the basic purpose of use
4. According to degree of automation
5. According to type of automation
6. According to size or capacity
7. According to type of blank
8. According to precision
9. According to configuration
4
1. According to primary
machining operations
(a) Turning: lathes.
5
2. According to nature
of cutting motion
(a) Rotating workpiece: all types of lathes.
6
3. According to the
basic purpose of use
a) General purpose: wide ranges of tools,
jobs and operations (e.g., centre lathes).
8
5. According to type of
automation
(a) Fixed automation: automatic lathe, transfer machines, etc.
Transfer Machine
9
6. According to size or
capacity
(a) Heavy duty: large, bulky horizontal and vertical
lathes, boring mills planing machines, etc. of power
above 11 kW (roughly).
(c) Small and mini: table top lathes of power less than
1.1 kW.
10
7. According to type of
blank
(a) Chucking type: vertical lathes, turning centre, etc.
(b) Bar type: capstan lathe, single spindle automatic lathe, etc.
8. According to precision
(a) General: centre lathes, milling machine, drilling machine, etc.
11
10. According to
configuration
(a) Horizontal: lathes in general, horizontal boring machine
and broaching machine.
12
Families of Conventional
Machine Tools
1. Lathe machine tools
1. Centre lathes: all horizontal
13
2. Single-purpose lathes
(a) Facing lathe.
(b) Multi-tooling
lathe.
14
3. Semi-automatic
lathes
(a) Capstan lathe of various sizes.
Copying lathe
15
4. Automatic lathes of
varying sizes
(a) Automatic cutting off lathe.
Pillar drill
17
2. Column drilling
machines
• The box column drill or pillar drill has a
heavy foot that is firmly mounted in the
floor or a workstation.
• A column runs over the foot of the drill
machine and extends into the housing.
On the column is also an adjustable drill
or machine table, which can be brought
to the appropriate height via a threaded
spindle.
18
3. Radial drilling
machines
A machine in which the
drilling head is mounted to
slide along a radial arm
which can be rotated, raised,
or lowered on a vertical mast
to adjust the position of the
drill above the workpiece
19
4. Gang drilling machine
20
5. Multiple spindle
drilling machine
(a) Horizontal type.
(b) Vertical type.

Grinding Machine
1. Cylindrical grinding 4. Screw threads grinding
(a) External grinding type.
machines
(b) Internal grinding type.
(a) For external threads.
(c) Both external and internal grinding
types. (b) For internal threads.
