MODULE 1:

DESCRIBING MOTION
DISTANCE AND
DISPLACEMENT
REFERENCE POINT
 the starting point or the origin for measuring
motion
 basis in determining if an object is changing its
position
 something that seems steady that is used to
compare the position of an object
MOMOTION – is defined as a continuous
change in position with respect to a reference
point for a particular time interval
TWO WAYS TO FIND OUT HOW FAR DID THE OBJECT TRAVEL

1. By measuring the total length of the path

travelled by the object

2. 2. By measuring the distance between the initial

position and final position
DISTANCE – the total length of the
entire path that the object or a person
traveled
- is always positive
- is a scalar quantity
DISPLACEMENT – the shortest
distance between the object’s initial
and final position
- can be positive, negative or even
zero
- is a vector quantity
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISTANCE AND
DISPLACEMENT?

1. Displacement always follow a straight line while

distance does not always follow a straight line

CAN DISPLACEMENT BE GREATER THAN DISTANCE? WHY?

2. No. It can be shorter but it can never be greater

than distance.
MINIMUM SPEED LIMIT MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT
SPEED
refers to how far an object moves in a
given time interval
how fast an object can cover a distance
in a given amount of time
is a scalar quantity
A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers
relatively large distance in a short amount of time.

A slow-moving object has a low speed and covers

relatively small distance in the same amount of time.
 Is a device used to measure the
instantaneous speed of a vehicle
1. A marble rolls 5.2 m in 1.8 s. What was
the marble's average speed?
2. A pitcher throws a baseball from the
pitcher’s mound to home plate in 0.46 s.
The distance is 18.4 m. What was the
average speed of the baseball?
3. Cassie walked to her friend’s house with
an average speed of 1.40 m/s. The distance
between the houses is 205 m. How long
did the trip take her?
VELOCITY

speed with direction

how fast an object is moving and to which
direction
refers to the rate of change in displacement
 is a vector quantity
1. A student has a displacement of 304 m north
in 180 s. What was the student's average
velocity?
2. Layla jogs with an average velocity of 2.4 m/s
east. What is her displacement after 46
seconds?
3. Phillip walks along a straight path from his
house to his school. How long will it take him
to get to school if he walks 428 m west with an
average velocity of 1.7 m/s west?
80
1.A Bicol-bound train travelling at 8 m/s
increases its speed to 18 m/s in 5 seconds.
Find its acceleration.
2.A car moving along a straight road at 10
m/s is stopped at a traffic light within 4
seconds. Calculate the acceleration of the
car.
3.1. A car starts from rest and attains a speed
of 40 km/h in 20 seconds. What is its
acceleration in km/h/s?
4. A cyclist going up the Kawakawa Hill at a
speed of 5 m/s slows down to 1 m/s in 8
seconds. Find his acceleration.
