Motivation
WHAT’S NEXT?
• The class will be divided into 4 groups.
• Pictures will be shown, and each group must draw
the next figure based on the pattern.
• To answer, the group must draw the next figure on
a provided card and raise it while shouting their
group number.
• The first group to shout their group name and raise
their card with the correct answer earns a point.

Arithmetic Sequence
An arithmetic sequence is a
sequence where every term after the
first is obtained by adding a constant
called the common difference (d).
Note: d can be obtained by subtracting the two

Example: 𝑑 = 𝑎2 − 𝑎1 𝑜𝑟 𝑑 = 𝑎3 − 𝑎2
consecutive terms.
Arithmetic Sequence
1, 4, 7, 10, 13 is an
example of arithmetic
sequence? Why or why
not?
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 1

Find the next term of

13, 8, 3, ___.
the common difference is -5

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 2

Find the 8 term of

th

13, 8, 3, ___.
FORMULA
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑

𝑎1 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚

where;

𝑎𝑛 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚

𝑛 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠
𝑑 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒

13, 8, 3, ___.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 2

𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑
Solution:

𝑎8 = 13 + (8 − 1) − 5
Formula

𝑎8 = 13 + (7)(−5)
Substitution
Simplify
𝑎8 = 13 + (-35)

𝑎8 = −22

REAL-LIFE APPLICATION
In celebration of Women's Month, Vernon, a
caring son, is saving money from his allowance to
purchase a meaningful gift for his mother.
Beginning on March 1st with an initial sum of 50
pesos, he intends to add 15 pesos to his savings
each day. By March 25th, he heads to the market Asked: What can Vernon afford with his
accumulated savings on March 25th?
to select a gift. Given the images of gifts provided Given:

PAIR-ACTIVITY
• This activity is conducted in pairs
• Each pair will collaborate with their seatmate as
their partner.
• There are two problems to solve, so the pair will
divide the tasks among themselves.
• Students will write their answers on one whole
sheet of paper, including both names of the pair.
• The class will have a time limit of 5 minutes to
solve the problem.
• The pair will be graded using a set of criteria.

b. 10th row
Given: 𝑎1 = 10, 𝑑 = 2, 𝑛 = 6
a. 6th row

𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑
Solution:
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑
Solution:

𝑎6 = 10 + (6 − 1)(2) 𝑎10 = 10 + (10 − 1)(2)

𝑎6 = 10 + (5) 2 𝑎10 = 10 + (9)2
𝑎6 = 10 + 10 𝑎10 = 10 + 18
𝑎6 = 20 𝑎10 = 28
