ROSEY RIFAT

M.SC NURSING 1ST YEAR

INTRODUCTION

Assessment is the part of everyday activities of

nursing professionals. Assessment is the only
way by which a teacher can know how
successful his teaching was and what areas in
teaching need improvement. Similarly, a student
can know his learning difficulties and also at
what position he stands in the crowd of students.
DEFINITION

“Assessment is the process of documenting, usually in

measurable terms, knowledge, skill, attitudes and beliefs”.
AUTHENTIC ASESSMENT
It is the form of evaluation in which students are asked to
perform real world tasks that demonstrate meaningful
application of knowledge and skills. It goes beyond
standardized tests to evaluate deeper understanding and
abilities, instead of just recalling information, students
must apply problem solving skills.
PRINCIPLES

Continuous process.
Integral part of curriculum.
Developmentally and culturally appropriate.
Focus’s on students strengths
 Authentic assessment recognizes that the most
important evaluation is self – evaluation.
…..Cont.

Active collaboration between teachers students.

TYPES AND APPROACHES TO ASSESSMENT

 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
 SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
 INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
 EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
DEFINITION
It is concerned with judgement made during the design and
/or development of a program, which is directed towards
modifying, forming, or otherwise improving the program
before it is completed.
AJ NITKO,1983
PURPOSES OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

To monitor the learning process of students during the

process of learning.
To provide continuous feedback
Feedback to students provides reinforcement of
successful learning and identifies the specific learning
errors that need correction.
…CONT.
Feedback to teacher provides information for
modifying instruction and for prescribing group and
individual remedial work
USES OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

oIdentify the levels of cognitive process of his students.

oChoose the most suitable teaching techniques and
materials.
oDetermine the feasibility of a program within the
classroom setting.
….continue
oDetermine areas needing modifications or
improvement in the teaching-learning process.
oDetermine to a great extent the outcome of
summative evaluation.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

DEFINITION
Summative assessment describes judgement about the merits
of an already completed program, procedure.
-AJ NITKO
PURPOSES OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Summative assessment is designed to find out the

extent to which the instructional objectives have been
achieved usually at the end of a terminal period.
Summative assessment occurs at the end of an
educational activity and is designed to judge the
learner's overall performance.
ASSUMPTIONS OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

oThe program objectives are achievable.

oThe teaching-learning process has been conducted
efficiently.
oThe teacher-student-material interactions have been
conducive to learning.
oThe teaching techniques, learning materials and
audiovisual aids are adequate and have been
judiciously dispensed.
o There is uniformity in classroom conditions for all
learners.
Comparison of summative and formative
assessment
FORMATIVE SUMMATIVE

FORMATIVE SUMMATIVE
Fosters development and Assess whether the results of the
improvement within an ongoing objects being evaluated met the
activity. stated goals.
Focus on process Focus on outcome
It is meant for continuous It is simply meant for terminal tests
evaluation via unit tests, ,annual tests and external
assignments. examination.
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Also known as internal evaluation. It is the type of

evaluation in which the evaluator is the one who teaches
the students. All other types of evaluations, whether
done in public or in schools, inside or outside the school,
by a teacher of the same school or from a different
school, are all external evaluations.
Thus, the three criteria for an internal evaluation are:

1. Direct involvement in the teaching-learning activities

of the class.
2. Setting of the question paper by the class teacher
teaching that class
3. Conduct of the examination and evaluation of scripts
by the teacher himself/herself.
INTERNAL EXAMINATION

Internal assessment can be defined as credits or scores obtained

continuously and periodically by the students in a subject. It
fulfills the requirements of continuous comprehensive
assessment of the students by including a variety of evaluative
activities as follows: viva voice, class work , assignments.
Problem solving activities;- clinical diary, cumulative
records, written tests, case presentation.
PURPOSES OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
 To help students know their strengths and weakness
 To inform teachers about the strengths and weakness of their
teachings.
 To provide feedback for the improvement of the course
contents, teaching methods and teaching learning process.
 To reduce fear of external examinations and prepare students
for them.
 To supplement external examinations.
…continue
 To manage the teaching learning environment of the
institution.
 To assess social, moral and personality development of the
students.
 To inculcate regular study habits among students.
 To assess learning difficulties of the students so that remedial
actions can be taken by the teachers .
NEED FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

oTo give credit in final assessment.

oTo reduce tension associated with final examination.
oTo provide link for feedback in teaching.
oTo provide opportunity to the teacher to evaluate his/her
students.
oTo induce student for continue learning.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INTERNAL
ASSESSMENT
oShould be continuous and made by subject teacher. It
does not replace exams.
oIt uses suitable evaluation tools and techniques.
oFix proportion of marks according to hours of
instructions and importance of subjects to nursing.
o Used as a feedback to improve teaching.
…CONTINUE
oStudents should know their internal assessment marks before
their final exams.
oGive opportunity to students to improve their internal
assessment guide by additional tests, assignments, etc.
o Results must be studied statistically, should be objective.
oInternal assessment should be comprehensive, evaluating all
aspects of student's growth.
…CONTINUE
oInternal assessment should be build into the total educational
program and used for improvement rather than for certifying
the level of the student.
o Internal assessment should be kept separately.
oInternal assessment items need not follow qualified scoring
procedures.
oThrough internal assessment teachers can change attitude of
students favorable towards day-to-day program.
COMPONENTS OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
SYSTEM
ITEMS TO BE OBSERVED:-
•PERIODIC TEST(UNIT TEST , TERM TEST)
•ORAL TEST
•HOME WORK/ CLASS WORK
•ASSIGNMENT
•DEBATES
•LIBRARY WORK
…CONTINUE
PERSONALITY TRAITS;
•CO-OPERATION
•HONESTY
•LEADERSHIP
•CONFIDENCE
•PRESERVERENCE
ADVANTAGES OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
No undue weight age is given to annual of external exams.
 Students will be engaged in study throughout the year.
 They will be more regular, alert, sincere.
 Eleventh hour preparation in exams will be reduced to minimum.
 Internal assessment helps to reduce anxiety and prevent nervous
breakdown in students
DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

• A teacher may misuse it.

• It can cause a great harm in the hands of an inexperienced
insincere teacher.
• It will lose its validity if favouritism. For some people,
exams make them stress.
EXTERNAL EXAMINATION/ ASSESSMENT

• An exam is an official test of knowledge .

• It is conducted through an external agency /school.
• Outside persons has taken the responsibility to conduct it.
• Provides pupils certificate/degree/diploma.
Eligibility for appearing for the examination:

80% of the attendance for theory and practical. However100%

of attendance for practical before the award of degree.
CLASSIFICATION OF RESULTS

o 50% pass in each of the theory and practical separately.

o 50-59% Second division
o 60-74% first division
o 75% and above is distinction
o For declaring the rank aggregate of 2 years marks to be
considered
If the candidate fails in either practical or theory paper he/she
has to reappear for both the papers (theory and practical)
Maximum no. of attempts per subject is three (3) inclusive of
first attempt. The maximum period complete the course
successfully should not exceed 4 years.
 Candidate, who fails in any two subjects, shall be permitted
to continue the studies into the second year. However the
candidate shall not be allowed to appear for the Second year
examination till such time that he/ she passes all subjects of
the first year M. Sc nursing examination
EXAMINATION SCHEME
1.Minimum pass marks shall be 50% in each of the Theory and
practical papers separately.
2.A candidate must have minimum of 80% attendance
(irrespective of the kind of absence) in theory and practical in
each subject for appearing for examination.
3.A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the
practical areas before award of degree
4.A candidate has to pass in theory and practical exam
separately in each of the paper.
…CONTINUE

5. If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper he/she

has to re-appear for both the papers (Theory and practical).
6. All practical examinations must be held in the respective
clinical areas.
7. One internal and one external examiners should jointly
conduct practical examination for each student
8. An examiner should be M.sc (N) in concerned subject and
have minimum of 3(three)years post graduate teaching
experience.
ADVANTAGES OF EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
oIt ensures uniformity of evaluation for all students
under a particular university or board of examination.
oIt strives to ensure objectivity in the examination
system.
oIt ensures chances of biasedness that may occur if
examinations are planned and executed by internal
teachers only.
oExaminations helps students to know his performance
and knowledge, and encourage them to work and
learn.
Examinations create competition, which
pushes the competitors to do their best. Hence, it
helps students in developing their personality and
confidence.
DISADVANTAGES OF EXTERNAL EXAMINATION

oIt takes a lot of time to plan and implement

external examination.
o It requires the appointment of the external
examiners.
…CONT.

•External examiners cannot evaluate students

comprehensively in a 3 hours test. It is time-
consuming for the external examiners as they
require traveling to and fro to conduct exam.
• For some students, exams make them stressed.
This is because there is too much pressure of their
parents and teachers.
CONCLUSION

Assessment for learning is powerful if carried out carefully and

thoughtfully. Students are more likely to take control of their
own learning if they have a clear vision of their targets that they
are supposed to master. If they are aware of what they know and
need to know and need to learn, they are more likely to close
the gap.
