LEVEL WRITITNG TIPS

CLASS BY : JOE
PURPOSE AND TYPES

 PURPOSE OF THE ESSAY: assess students’ writing skills, critical thinking, and
ability to express themselves effectively within a limited timeframe. (20 minutes)
(TWO PAGES)
 Topics: broad and varied
 TYPES: 1. persuasive essay, what is it? (you will be asked to take a side on an
issue )
2. Expository essay or creative essay : (Two sentences will be provided, and
students are asked to select the sentence they find most
interesting and use it as the basis for an essay or a story. )
ESSAY TOPICS EXAMPLES

Persuasive Essay Topics:


1. Is it more important to learn from mistakes or successes?
2. Which are more important, arts and music or sports and
athletics?
Expository OR creative Essay Topics:
1. What three qualities define a good student?
2. What is the most important issue facing the world today and
what would you do to contribute to solving this issue?
EXPOSITORY or CREATIVE ESSAY
STRUCTURE

Two sentences will be provided, and students are asked to


select the sentence they find most interesting and use it as the
basis for an essay or a story.
EG: “I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
“He couldn’t believe his eyes.”
General Tips for All Essays

 Address the essay topic appropriately (persuasive, expository, or


creative).
 Structure:
 Essays: Introduction, body paragraphs (2-3), conclusion.
 Creative writing: Clear beginning, middle, and end.
 Time management: Allocate time for editing.
EXPOSITORY OR CREATIVE WRITING
TIPS:
 Point of View: Decide on first-person (“I”) or third-person (“he,” “she,” “they”) perspective.
 Tense Consistency: Stick to either past tense (“I saw,” “I went”) or present tense (“I see,” “I
go”).
 Setting: Describe the story’s setting using sensory details (sight, smell, taste, touch, sound).
 Conflict: Introduce the main conflict early in your story.
 Structure: Ensure your story has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
 Point of view (first-person or third-person).
 Consistent tense (past or present).
 Setting description (sensory details).
 Introduce conflict early.
 Definition: If defining something, provide a clear explanation and support it with relevant
examples.
 Description: Choose a familiar subject and discuss its important qualities in detail.
 Cause and Effect: Establish the cause, define the effects, and offer explanations or solutions.
Persuasive Essay Tips:

Take a Side: Avoid neutrality; argue for or against


an idea.
Concrete Examples: Support your position with
examples from history, literature, or personal
experience.
Counterargument: Address opposing views and
explain why they are weaker.
Conclusion:
