You will need to upload your submission

Open book assessment:
Rules
This report will be completed at home and is an Open
Book assessment.
This means that:
• You can use your notes in your notebook.
• You can use the eBook / book.
• You can use the internet to see other report
styles/ideas but do NOT copy.
Plagiarism: Key
information
Plagiarism (copying online) is illegal and
carries a -40 point penalty as well as
getting a 0 for your grade.
I have plagiarism software and will be
checking each report!

This report MUST be sound like it was

written in your own words.
Book report: Rules
1. A book report is meant to summarise the events
of the book, not retell it in full.

2. When you summarise the story, you must do so

while focusing on the topic of your question.
3. Open Book Assessment – NO PLAGARISM!
Option 1: Write a book report discussing how
the character Maurice changes and develops
during the story.
Report Expectations:
• Discuss what kind of character Maurice was like at the
beginning.
• Discuss if his character changes and how.
• Discuss key events in the story that involve Maurice.
• Discuss the character he becomes in the end.
• Use some quotes from the book to evidence your answers.
Option 2: Write a book report discussing how is
the theme of ‘trickery’ shown in the book.
Assessment expectations:
• Give detailed examples of tricks that happen throughout the
book.
• Discuss how these examples change from beginning to end.
• Discuss which characters are involved and what they do.
• Discuss key events in the book that relate to trickery.
• Use some quote from the book to evidence your answers.
Option 3: Compare the actions of 3 rats of
your choice and discuss how they contribute
to the rat clan.
Assignment expectations:
• Choose 3 rats to compare and discuss.
• Analyse each character’s personality and the role they have in the
clan. Do they get along or do they clash/argue?
• Discuss any links these rats have in the book and if this ever
changes.
• Discuss important moments in the books involving your chosen
rats.
• Use some quotes to evidence your answer.
Goal: To summarise the main
events of the book, not to
retell the whole story!
This book report is designed to challenge you to pick out the
most relevant information and summarise clearly and concisely.

You can retell a very short version of the story (like a

small paragraph), but spend more time detailing key
events that are important to your chosen question.

Retelling the entire story in full is not a book report.

Focus: You must focus on the
topic
Example.
of your question
If you choose the Maurice question:

Yes you can talk about the rats, because Maurice and the
rats work together.

But telling me an all-rat part of the story, with no Maurice,

is not relevant to this question and will not gain you any
points.

Book report: Using quotes
1. Using quotes will
improve your grade.

2. The quotes must relate

to the question you are
trying to answer they
cannot be random or
unrelated.
Using quotes: Level up
If you use quotes outside of
the ones provided on the
slides
(which we discussed in
class) you will further
increase your chance of a
higher score IF they are
used correctly.
How do you think we
can include quotes in
our assignment?
What are they used for?
Steps to using quotes
correctly
Step 1: Choose a part of the story that you want to summarise
(that is relevant to your question)

Step 2: Include you quote in quotation marks “ “

Step 3: Tell the reader why this quote is important to the point
you are trying to make.
Using quotes: Class
Option 1: Write a book report
example
discussing how the character
Maurice changes and develops
during the story.

What I want to summarise:

Whilst Maurice did indeed change
his ways throughout the story, the
author makes it seem like he will go
back to his old tricks! This is
because of “……….. “ which happens
at the end of th story. This quote
shows that Maurice will never
change!
Using quotes: Class
example
Option 1: Write a book report discussing how the character
Maurice changes and develops during the story.

What I want to summarise:

Whilst Maurice did indeed change his ways throughout the
story, the author makes it seem like he will go back to his old
tricks! This is because of “Hey stupid looking kid? Wanna be
Lord Mayor?” which happens at the end of th story. This
quote shows that Maurice will never change because it seems
like he is trying to turn the new kid into Keith!

Option 3: Compare the actions of
3 rats of your choice and
discuss how they contribute to
the rat clan.
