Region VII (Central Visayas)

provinces compose the region: Bohol,
Cebu and Siquijor.
Central visayas
Central Visayas, officially designated
as Region VII, is an administrative
region in the Philippines occupying the
central section of the Visayas. It covers
4 provinces, namely, Bohol, Cebu,
Negros Oriental, and Siquijor, as well as
3 highly urbanized cities. The regional
center is the City of Cebu.
Central Visayas, Region VII in the Philippines,
comprises four provinces, three urbanized cities,
major islands Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and eastern
Negros.
Central Visayas (Cebuano: Tunga-tungang Kabisay-
an; Tagalog: Gitnang Kabisayaan) is an
administrative region in the Philippines, numerically
designated as Region VII. It consists of four provinces: (
Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor) and three
highly urbanized cities: Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu, and
Mandaue).
Major islands are the eponymous Cebu,
Bohol, and Siquijor, together with the eastern
part of Negros. The regional center and largest
city is Cebu City. The region is dominated by
the native speakers of four Visayan languages:
Cebuano, Bantayanon, Boholano, and
Porohanon. The land area of the region is
15,895.66 km2 (6,137.35 sq mi), and with a
population of 8,081,988 inhabitants, it is the
second most populous region in the Visayas.
On May 29, 2015, the region was
redefined, when Central Visayas
(Region VII) lost the province of
Negros Oriental to the newly formed
Negros Island Region. However, the
region was dissolved, with Negros
Oriental returned to Central Visayas
on August 9, 2017.
What is Central Visayas known for?

Central Visayas is the centrall region of the


Visayas group of islands in the Philippines. The
region is a destination for beachcombers and
historic landmarks which dates back to 1521.
The island of Bohol is popular for Korean
tourists while Cebu is popular to Japanese
business and leisure travelers.
Etymology

American colonists named the


region Sugbu to represent the
centrality of the islands within the
Visayas area. Proposals suggest
renaming the current Central
Visayas region, dominated by the
Cebuano ethnic group, to Sugbu
region.
History
In 1972, the Philippines
was divided into 11 regions by
President Ferdinand Marcos'
Integrated Reorganization
Plan, including the Central
Visayas region, which included
Cebu, Bohol, and Negros
Oriental
In 2015, President Aquino III
removed Negros Oriental from Central
Visayas to form the Negros Island
Region. However, in 2017, President
Duterte dissolved the region, citing
insufficient funds, and reintroduced
Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City
back into Central Visayas
Geography
Central Visayas comprises Cebu and
Bohol provinces, Siquijor island, and
outlying islands, including the eastern half
of Negros. It is bordered by the Visayan
Sea, Negros Occidental, Bohol Sea,
Camotes Sea, and Leyte Island.

Region VII, located in the Philippines, comprises


Bohol, Cebu, and Siquijor island provinces. Its terrain is
highland with narrow coastal strips, with Cebu being the
major business, industrial, and services center.

Products of Central Visayas

Hog, chicken and chicken eggs, palay and


sugarcane were the major commodities in the
region. They contributed 55.15 percent to the
region's agricultural output. Hog production in
Central Visayas ranked 4th in the national
production. It ranked 3rd in the production of
sugarcane and chicken eggs.

Binangkal- is a traditional Filipino


doughnut-like snack originating from the
islands of Visayas and Mindanao. The
dough is usually made with a
combination of flour, milk, baking
powder, baking soda, sugar, sesame
seeds, and oil. The dry and wet
ingredients are mixed and the dough is
divided into small balls
Shakoy, also known as lubid-lubid or bicho-bicho, is a
traditional Filipino doughnut characterized by its twisted
shape. The dough is typically made with a combination of
flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Once prepared, the dough is
shaped into an elongated log and twisted into a braid,
then sprinkled with granulated sugar before it's deep-fried
to golden perfection.
Nowadays, there are also versions of shakoy made
from rice flour, but those versions have a chewier texture
and they're usually topped with sesame seeds. Shakoy is
often enjoyed as a snack or a dessert, and it's also
served for breakfast.
Rosquillo - is a Filipino cookie that was invented by
Margarita Frasco in Cebu in 1907. The name comes from
the Spanish word roscas, meaning ringlet, although these
cookies have nothing to do with the Spanish rosquilla
donuts.
The cookies are made with a combination of eggs, flour,
sugar, shortening, and baking powder, while white wine
and anise extract can be added for extra flavor, if desired.
The dough is shaped into rings before it's baked until
golden brown. It is recommended to roll the cookies in
sugar before serving, while they are still warm
Otap - is a sweet, thin, oval-shaped Filipino
treat made with puff pastry. These treats are
usually small in size, generously sprinkled with
sugar, and have an incredibly crispy and
crumbly texture. It is believed that otap
originated in Cebu, and today it represents a
signature product of the entire region.
The sugary biscuits are available at
numerous local markets and stores and are
usually enjoyed as a light desser t or a sweet
afternoon snack.
Utan - easy to prepare and packed with healthy
vegetables, utan is a famous Filipino soup which originated
in Visayan Islands. This clear vegetable soup was originally
a poor man’s dish, which included any vegetables that were
at hand. Nowadays, it can also include a wide variety of root
vegetables and leafy greens which are merely cooked in
salted water.
Occasionally, this nutritious soup can be enriched with
chunks of meat or pieces of fried fish. Even though it
originated as a frugal dish, today it is regarded as an
extremely healthy soup that is typically prepared in many
Filipino households.
Budbud or suman - also known as sticky rice cakes or
glutinous rice cakes are quite famous all over the island.To be
honest, this delicacy can be very filling and as it is a high-
carbohydrate snack. The good part is, it is very healthy. Budbud is
actually glutinous rice mixed with coconut milk. In Leyte, there is a
variant of this Budbud known as moron.
Budbod is almost always wrapped in banana leaves cause
they say that it brings the best taste out of the food.There are
various recipes for the Budbud, depending upon the region. The
most popular version includes coconut milk and salt. Others are
served with brown sugar, grated coconut, coconut jam, peanut
butter and melted chocolate. Budbud is most popular during the
Christmas season and you will find people often pairing it with hot
chocolate and sweet mango slices.
Dried Mangoes - is considered as the best
nutritious and convenient snack around the world. Very
convenient, that made Cebu City more popular
because of distributing the finiest dried mangoes
around the globe.Not just Cebu City, Japan and Italy
are also selling well. The food that made a mark in
Southeast Asia.The largest Philippine-based dried
mango producer is the Profood International
Corporation. The founder of Profood was Justin Uy in
1978.As of today, Cebu has a reputation for being
considered as the main source of dried mangoes here
in the Philippines. Cebu-based SPFTC is engaged in
the export.
Kalamay - a popular
sticky sweet delicacy in
the Philippines, is made
from coconut milk, brown
sugar, and ground
glutinous rice, and can
be flavored with
margarine, peanut butter,
or vanilla.
Preparation - kalamay is a coconut milk dessert made by
extracting two batches of coconut milk, grinding glutinous rice into
a paste, and boiling brown sugar to create latík. It can be served
hot or at room temperature, with viscous versions being cooled for
easier consumption.

Consumption - kalamay is a popular pasalubong (the Filipino


tradition of a homecoming gift). They are often eaten alone, directly
from the packaging. Kalamay is also used in a variety of traditional
Filipino dishes as a sweetener.This includes Suman and Bukayo. It
can be added to beverages as well, like coffee, milk, or hot
chocolate.
Lechón - is a popular pork
dish in Spain and Latin
America, featuring a whole
roasted pig cooked over
charcoal. Originating from the
Spanish term "lechón," it is a
national dish of the Philippines
and Puerto Rico. Today, it uses
medium-sized adult pigs or
domesticated animals.
Lechón is a traditional dish prepared for
special occasions, festivals, and holidays. It
involves skewing a pig on a stick and roasting it
in a charcoal pit, resulting in a crisp pork skin,
and is a distinctive feature of the region.

The swine industry in the Philippines ranks


second in the agricultural sector, largely without
subsidies, due to its popularity among locals and
tourists, with an estimated 65,000 lechón
produced in December 2010.
Region 7 - also known as Central Visayas Region,
comprises Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and
Siquijor islands in the Philippines, bordered by the
Visayan Sea, Masbate, Mindanao Sea, Negros
Occidental, and Leyte.
The region is hilly and mountainous, with
famous Chocolate Hills and Mt. Bolinsasayao
and Kanlaon Volcano. Flatlands are used for
farming and cottage industries. Mountains protect
against strong typhoons, but the region
experiences minimal rainfall.
Product and livelihood -The region's farming
landscape is limited, but includes crops like palay, corn,
sugarcane, abaca, coconut, tobacco, and root crops.
Fisheries are a significant source of income, and home
industries include bag and fan manufacturing, as well as a
unique food industry.

The mangoes of Cebu are also famous for its sweetness


and size. Mangoes are harvested all year round These fruits
are exported to other countries.
Cebu, the southern Philippines' commerce
hub, attracts foreign businesses, attracting Mactan
International Airport. Tourism, particularly the Shrine
of Magellan's Cross, and the Chocolate Hills, are
significant economic drivers.

Oil is also being tapped in the region. It is


believed that in the years to follow, the progress in
the region would be greater if oil is properly drawn
out and it will help in the needs of the country.
There are other natural resources
waiting to be nurtured and used properly.
Businessmen, both local and foreign, would
be more than willing to put up their trade.
The local and national economies would be
a lot better if these plans would push
through.
