Noise Ratings Explained
 Parker PZG.... Standard pump. Nothing special was
done to achieve these ratings.
 Vickers V10.... Fixed VANE style pump. Slightly
quieter than PZG but more expensive and limited to
2200 PSI maximum.
 Bosch Split Gear.... Custom, and expensive, split gear
design. Roughly 2X the price of PZG style pump.
 Bosch 0510... Standard gear pump construction.
Priced similar to PZG.
Noise Ratings Conclusion

 Although PZG was 0.5dBA above the

Vickers fixed vane pump, and 1.0 dBA
above the Bosch Split Gear pump,
they are both substantially more
expensive than the PZG product line.
The only pump tested that was not
substantially more expensive was the
Bosch 0510 and the PZG was 5.0 dBA
QUIETER.

CLAMP CIRCUIT
PRESSURE COMPENSATOR

 Maintains full pump flow at all

pressures below compensator setting

 When compensator pressure setting

reached, pump reduces displacement
(de-strokes) to provide only flow
required by circuit

PVP (23 - 140)
PVP Piston Pumps
 Max pump case to inlet differential pressure = 10 PSI
Case can see full pump flow instantaneously when
pump rapidly de - strokes (accelerate fluid out drain line)

Break slipper retainer

Break ball seat
Roll slippers
Case goes negative when pump rapidly goes on - stroke
 Drain line unrestricted (filters, coolers etc) at least size of
port
CLAMP CIRCUIT
Pressure
Compensator
 At pressures below
compensator setting,
flow remains
maximum.
 When compensator
setting is reached, the

GPM
pump de-strokes to
maximum required (or
zero) flow. The pump
will maintain maximum
pressure until system PSI

pressure drops.
Standard Pressure
Compensator

 Applications
Small machine tools
Clamp circuits
Hydraulic presses
 Energy savings over fixed displacement
Less heat generation
Less power consumption
Remote Pressure Compensator

 Operation same as standard

compensator but allows control of
compensator setting from a
remote location (direct acting
relief valve)
Remote Comp Max.
Stroke
emote Comp Min. Stroke
Remote Compensator (23 - 140)
Remote Pressure
Compensator
 At pressures below
compensator
setting, flow remains
maximum.
 When compensator
setting is reached,

GPM
the pump de-strokes
to only required (or
zero) flow. The pump
will maintain
maximum pressure PSI
until system
pressure drops.
Remote / Stand-by Application
 Remote compensator
allows control of
pump from a remote
location. With addition
of a 2 way valve the
pump can be forced
into a low pressure
(differential spring)
stand-by condition.
Less noisy (by 1/3), no
heat from case drain,
power savings

Remote Pressure Compensator
 Applications
In - tank pump mount
Low pressure stand - by
Multi - pressure compensation
 Advantages
Machine flexibility
Machine control at operator’s station
Smaller prime mover - Energy savings
FEED & SHEAR
Load Sense Compensator
 A load sense compensator will react to increases
in the load by increasing output pressure. This is
done by sensing the pressure drop across an
external orifice and adjusting displacement to
maintain a constant pressure drop across the
orifice.
 For instance… If the external orifice is set to flow
2 GPM, the load sense compensator will react to
changes in the load pressure by stroking or de-
stroking the pump to maintain a constant
pressure drop across the external orifice. If a
constant pressure drop is achieved 2 GPM will be
maintained.
L.S. Comp Max. Stroke
L.S. Comp Min. Stroke
Load sense (23 - 140)
Load Sense Compensator
 The load sense comp
will increase or
decrease the output
flow to maintain a
constant delta across
the load orifice. This

GPM
means that regardless
of load conditions the
flow will remain
constant for a given
PSI
orifice opening.
FEED & SHEAR
Load Sense Compensator

 Pressure drop across external orifice

controlled by differential spring
 Higher spring setting = faster response,
lower efficiency
Factory set @ 125 PSI
Load Sense & Pressure Comp

 Applications
Broach
Conveyor
Test bench - flow source
Alternative to competitors lever or handwheel
 Advantages
More flexibility
Smaller prime mover
More energy efficient than standard compensator
Horsepower Control
Compensator
 A horsepower control (torque control)
compensator will change the compensator
pressure as swashplate angle changes, to
maintain a constant horsepower (torque).
HP = (PSI x GPM) / 1714
 As swashplate angle (flow) increases, the
compensator pressure setting will decrease.
At lower swashplate angles, compensator
pressure settings increase. The result is that
a smaller prime mover can be used to provide
the torque needed to turn the pump.

Introduction
 PAVC Piston Pumps are built to be rugged for
the most demanding mobile and industrial
applications.
 PAVC Pumps offer the smallest package size,
for hydraulic horsepower output, of any major
piston pump manufacturer. Cartridge style
controls help to keep the installation envelope
size down.
 With a two week lead-time NO OTHER MAJOR
SUPPLIER can provide their customers with a
quicker response.

Application Problem #1
 Specifications (by Customer)
- Engine to turn CCW @ 3000 rpm, pump to run via a
Universal Joint
- Flow required is 45gpm
- 3000 PSI continuous pressure requirement
- Needs Horsepower Control
- Smallest possible package size (no external valving)
- Needs a splined shaft
 What pump would you use??
Application Solution #1

 Answer : PAVC659BRH
- Specify (9) Dual Bearing to allow universal
joint to turn pump.
- Horsepower control.
PAVC & PVP Start-Up Tips

 Always Fill the Pump Case with Clean Fluid

 With Flooded Suction (recommended), Purge
Air from Suction Lines by Cracking Inlet Line
or Vent Plug
 Start the Pump Slowly by Jogging
 Check for Proper Shaft Rotation
 Start the Pump with an Open Circuit
Whenever Possible
PAVC & PVP Troubleshooting
 Pump Will Not Prime (pump should prime within
30 seconds. If it doesn't, STOP!)
- Check for Proper Drive Rotation
- Make Sure Pump Shaft is Turning (coupling)
- Make Sure Reservoir is Full
- Check for Major Sources of a Suction Leak (vent
plug open, flange not tight, pinched o-ring at
flange or pump housing)
- Check volume stop set at less than 2/3 stroke
- Check fluid viscosity (cold oil)
- Long, small suction line ?
PAVC Troubleshooting

 Loss of Prime
Leak in pump - port, between front & trunnion
housing, volume stop seal, etc
Control drain or airbleed not plumbed below fluid
level in reservoir
Suction plumbed from bottom on tank top mount
PAVC & PVP Troubleshooting

 Can’t Build any Pressure

- Make Sure Pump is Primed
- Check Alignment
- Make Sure System is Not an Open Circuit (A
pump produces flow, not pressure. It can only
LIMIT pressure when the system requirement is
higher that the pump compensator setting)
PAVC & PVP Troubleshooting

 Can Only Build a Few Hundred PSI

- Compensator is Backed All the Way Out
- Remote or Load Sense Line is Vented
- Pressure Control Dart is Lodged Open
- Torque Control Plug is Missing (PAVC)
- Wrong Compensator Spool (PVP)
PAVC & PVP Troubleshooting

 Pump Will Not Compensate

- Differential Spring Over-Compressed (spring
guide dislocated)
- Drain Line Blocked (PAVC)
- Spool Travel is Hindered
- Control Orifice Missing (PAVC)
- Saturation Orifice is Missing in a Load Sense
Circuit
PAVC Troubleshooting

 Pump Will Not Prime (pump should prime within

30 seconds. If it doesn't, STOP!)
- Check for Proper Drive Rotation
- Make Sure Pump Shaft is Turning
- Make Sure Reservoir is Full
- Check for Major Sources of a Suction Leak (vent
plug open, flange not tight, pinched o-ring at

Two Causes for Pump Noise

 primary cause for pump noise

- vibration of pump body due to pulsating forces
- influenced mainly by pump body design
 secondary cause for pump noise
- vibration of power unit or environment induced
by flow and pressure pulsation
