I. A QUICK REVIEW OF SIMPLE PAST and PAST CONTINUOUS


Simple Past
With Regular Verbs +ed With Irregular Verbs ( changes)
EX: move - study Ex : take - go
He moved to Moroco She took her breakfast
He studied Arabic She went to school.

Simple Past Continuous


With Regular Verbs (+ing) With Irregular Verbs (+ing)

EX: work Ex : take - go


My father was working She was taking her breakfast
She was going to school.
II. PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS:

D. My father was working as a teacher for 30 years. He retired last year.

Action 1: My father was working as a teacher for 30 years. Action 2 : He retired last year.

- After my father had been working as a teacher for 30 years, he retired last year.

- Before my father retired last year, he had been working as a teacher for 30 years.
Consider these further examples:

1. Salwa hadn’t been studying any French before she graduated from university ; she had been studying English.

2 - Samir : Had your uncle been smoking for a long time before he got lung cancer ?

- Nabil : Yes, he had been smoking for 15 years before he got lung cancer.

Past Perfect Continuous Use the past perfect continuous to indicate that
Affirmative: Subj + had been + V + ing … + S.p. an action/activity was happening before another
one. The 1st action takes the past perfect
Interrogative: Had + subj + been + V + ing … + S. p. ?
continuous form, and the 2nd action takes the
Negative : Subj + hadn’t been + V + ing … + S. p. simple past form.
PRACTICE :

B. Use the PAST SIMPLE or the PAST PEREFCT CONTINUOUS.

1. The pavement ( be) …………………….muddy because it ( rain) …………………………….all night.

2. He (not/do) ……………………..anything for months before this job offer (come) ………………….

3. Because the boss ( talk) ………………..to clients for hours, he (want) ……………..a break.

4. I (drink) …………………… coffee all evening. By bedtime, I (feel) …………………..really sleepless!

5. I (see) …………….… John yesterday, but he (run) ……………………. ; so he was too tired to chat.
B. Use the PAST SIMPLE or the PAST PEREFCT CONTINUOUS.

1. The pavement ( be) was muddy because it ( rain) had been raining all night.

2. He (not/do) hadn’t been doing anything for months before this job offer (come) came.

3. Because the boss ( talk) had been talking to clients for hours, he (want) wanted a break

4. I (drink) had been drinking coffee all evening. By bedtime, I (feel) felt really sleepless!

5. I (see) saw John yesterday, but he (run) had been running ; so he was too tired to chat.
C. Use the PAST PERFECT SIMPLE or the PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS.

C. Use the PAST PERFECT SIMPLE or the PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS.

3. We (watch) had been watching the play for about 90 mins when the lights went off.
