Starting the computer

 Switch power on:


1. UPS
2. Monitor

 Log in:
Click “Student X”

 Also there are a lot of things. If you look at the
desktop you see a lot of small pictures these
pictures are called icons.
 Each icon has a special function.

 Position the mouse on an empty area of the desktop.


You see the mouse pointer also called the mouse
cursor or simply the cursor

 To see a tool tip, position (only position) the mouse


on the Recycle Bin icon and see the sentence that
appears

 Position the mouse on an empty area of the


desktop and make sure the mouse pointer is not
touching anything else:
 Place your index finger on the left mouse button
and press the mouse button once. This action is
called Click
 Notice that nothing happens
 Move the mouse and position its cursor on
Recycle Bin
 Then press the mouse button again once

 After clicking, notice that the Recycle Bin icon


becomes highlighted. This is also referred to as
"selected"
 Position the mouse on another item such as
Internet Explorer. Then click once
 Notice that Recycle Bin is not selected anymore
but the new item is now selected or highlighted
 Position the mouse on an empty area on the
desktop and click

 Position the mouse cursor on Recycle Bin

 Then press the left mouse button twice, very fast.


A rectangular object called a window should
open.

 To perform double-clicking again, position the


mouse cursor on the most upper-left small picture
on the rectangular object

Then double-click again


Notice that the rectangular
window has disappeared

 Position the mouse on Recycle Bin


 Click once and hold your mouse button down
 While the mouse is still down, move it in the
right direction until Recycle Bin is positioned
somewhere in the middle center of the desktop
 Then release the mouse
 Once again, position the mouse on another icon
 Click and hold the mouse button down
 While the mouse button is still down and the
item is selected, move the mouse right and down
until the item is not positioned where it was
 Then release the mouse

 Position the mouse pointer on an unoccupied area


on the desktop.
 Position the middle finger (of the hand that is using
the mouse) on the right button of the mouse and press
it once.
 Notice that a series of words, referred to as a menu,
appears

 Position the mouse on the Taskbar. Then click the


right mouse button with your middle finger .
 Notice that a different series of words appears
 Position the mouse on Recycle Bin and right-click:

 Typing (alphanumeric) keys. These keys include
the same letter, number, punctuation, and symbol
keys found on a traditional typewriter.
 Control keys. These keys are used alone or in
combination with other keys to perform certain
actions. The most frequently used control keys are
CTRL, ALT, the Windows logo key and ESC.
 Function keys. The function keys are used to
perform specific tasks. They are labelled as F1, F2,
F3, and so on, up to F12. The functionality of these
keys differs from program to program.

The Keyboard

 Navigation keys. These keys are used for moving


around in documents or webpages and editing text.
They include the arrow keys, HOME, END, PAGE
UP, PAGE DOWN, DELETE, and INSERT.

 Numeric keypad. The numeric keypad is handy


for entering numbers quickly. The keys are
grouped together in a block like a conventional
calculator or adding machine.

Numbers
Use the alphanumerical keys to write any text.
Punctuation marks
Symbols
Press SHIFT in combination with a letter to type an uppercase letter. Press
SHIFT SHIFT in combination with another key to type the symbol shown on the
upper part of that key.
Press CAPS LOCK once to type all letters as uppercase. Press CAPS LOCK
CAPS LOCK again to turn this function off. Your keyboard may have a light indicating
whether CAPS LOCK is on.
Press DELETE to delete the character after the cursor, or the selected text;
DELETE
(In Windows, delete the selected item and move it to the Recycle Bin)
Press BACKSPACE to delete the character before the cursor, or the selected
BACKSPACE
text.
SPACEBAR Press the SPACEBAR to move the cursor one space forward.

TAB Press the TAB key to move the cursor several spaces forward.

Press ENTER to move the cursor to the beginning of the next line. In a
ENTER
dialog box, press ENTER to select the highlighted button.

Keyboard: Navigation Keys
ARROW KEY Move the cursor or selection one space or line in
the direction of the arrow, or scroll a webpage in
the direction of the arrow
HOME Move the cursor to the beginning of a line or
move to the top of a webpage
END Move the cursor to the end of a line or move to
the bottom of a webpage
CTRL+HOME Move to the top of a document
CTRL+END Move to the bottom of a document
PAGE UP Move the cursor or page up one screen
PAGE DOWN Move the cursor or page down one screen
