Properties of
Electromagnetic Waves
(Continuation)
Check Your Understanding
Electromagnetic waves - transverse waves
The electric field and magnetic field of an
electromagnetic wave are perpendicular to each other.
PROPERTIES OF EM WAVES
Period (T) - the time it takes for the wave to finish
one complete wavelength.
Frequency (f) - the number of complete waves
passing through the point in a unit of time.
Wavelength (λ) - the distance the wave covers per
cycle of propagation or the length of one complete
wave.
Check Your Understanding
A wave speed or the speed of wave is the distance traveled by
a given point on a wave in a given interval of time.
We know that the speed of the light = m/s (constant)

1 Hertz refers to one cycle per second.

The frequency is inversely related to the period of a wave.

Frequency of the wave is inversely proportional to the

wavelength, hence, the wavelength and energy of a wave are
also inversely proportional.
Check Your Understanding
Regular or linear frequency (f), it counts the number
of complete oscillations or rotations in a given period
of time. Its units are therefore cycles per second
(cps), also called hertz (Hz).
Angular frequency (ω), is measured in radians per
second (rad/s) and represents the rotational speed
or frequency of the object’s motion. It plays a crucial
role in various fields, including mechanics,
electromagnetism, and wave theory.
SI Unit: The SI unit of angular frequency is radians
per second (rad/s).
Angular frequency is denoted by ω (omega).
Check Your Understanding
The formula for calculating angular frequency given standard
frequency is:
(If the angular frequency is being ask in the problem solving)

Where,
ω (omega) is the angular frequency,
π (pi) is a mathematical constant approximately equal to
3.14159
f (frequency) is the regular frequency

Frequency Formula
The frequency formula is given as,

EQUATION 1: The frequency formula in terms of time is given

as:

f = 1/T

where,
f is the frequency in hertz measured in m/s, and
T is the time to complete one cycle in seconds
Check Your Understanding

EQUATION 2: The frequency formula in terms of

wavelength and wave speed is given as,

f = 𝜈/λ

where,

𝜈 is the wave speed in m/s, and

λ is the wavelength of the wave in m

EQUATION 3: Frequency in terms of angular

frequency is articulated as,

f = ω/2π

where ω is the angular frequency (given in a

problem solving)

For light traveling in a vacuum or empty space, you

can readily obtain the period or frequency from a given
wavelength and vice versa since the speed is a
constant quantity.

Where,
c = m/s (speed of light)
λ (wavelength)
f (frequency)
