LESSON 3:

MODERN
MUSIC
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
It is defined as music that involves
electronic processing of the output.

This includes musical instruments such

as synthesizers and electronic
instruments, as well as recordings, tape
recordings, and editing and processing
done digitally using computers. 2
AUDIO FREQUENCY
OSCILLATORS
First appeared in the 1920s. These
instruments are wave generators that
produce pure tones. These include
electromechanical and electronic
musical instruments specifically the
electronic organ.
3
THEREMIN
A sonophonic sound-
producing instrument
invented by Léon Theremin in
the 1920s. Unlike most
instruments, it is played
without physical contact.
Instead, the musician controls
the pitch and volume of the 4
sound by moving their hands
MUSIQUE CONCRÉTE
In 1948, musical compositions created with
edited magnetic tape collages began. This
was called musique concréte.

5
KARLHEINZ
One of theSTOCKHAUSEN
most prominent
German composers of the
20th century. He made
groundbreaking work in the
field of electronic music. His
composition "Gesang der
Jünglinge"(song of the Youth)
is considered one of the
masterpieces of electronic 6
EDGARD VARÈSE
The Father of
Electronic Music. His
compositions, which
emphasized timbre
and rhythm, were
made of "sound
masses".
7
CHANCE MUSIC
It can be called "aleatory music",
belongs to the 20th-century music
genre, in which chance is given to a
performer in the realization and
performance of the composition. This
compositional genre opens itself to
improvisation by simply giving
directions and guide as to how the
8
music is to be played.
JOHN CAGE
One of the innovative
composers of 20th century
Western music. Cage was
born on 5 September 1912
in New York City. His
unorthodox style in
composition influenced
composers after his time. 9
JOHN CAGE
He studied under expressionist composer
Arnold Schoenberg among other prominent
musicians during his formal music studies in
Seattle from 1938 to 1940. As a composer,
he created works for dance as he
collaborated with choreographer and
dancer Merce Cunningham, with whom he
had a long-term creative and personal 10
relationship.
JOHN CAGE
Cage started composing with the 12-tone
technique, which was introduced by his
teacher, eventually veering toward
ambiguous creative styles. One of his
experiments was "to prepare" a piano. In
this task, Cage would place screws, bolts,
and rubber strips between piano strings to
produce a rather different timbre than the 11
usual sound of piano strings.
JOHN CAGE
Cage is known for his composition 4' 33".
This is a work for any instrument wherein
the performer or instrumentalist would do
nothing with his or her instrument for four
minutes and 33 seconds. In this
composition, the goal of Cage was to let his
audience listen to the ambient sound and
its spontaneity, instead of the sound 12
created by the instrument.
