Statics of Rigid Bodies

Engr. Marchel S. Castidad, PICE

Topic 1

Introduction to Mechanics (Statics)

Engineering Mechanics

-defined as the science which describes and

predicts the conditions of rest or motion of
bodies under the action of forces
Statics

Mechanics dealing with the relations

of forces that produce equilibrium
among material bodies
Fundamental Concepts of Statics
Rigid Body – defined as a definite amount of matter the
parts of which are in fixed position relative to one other

Mass – is the invariant property of a body which

measures its resistance to a change of motion

Force – is the action exerted by one body upon another

Axioms – principles of mechanics are postulated upon several more or
less self-evident facts which cannot be proved mathematically but can
only be demonstrated to be true.
1. The Parallelogram Law – the resultant of two forces is the diagonal
formed on the vectors of these forces
2. Two forces are equilibrium only when equal magnitude, opposite in
direction, and collinear in action
3. A set of forces in equilibrium maybe added to any system of forces
without changing the effect of the original system
4. Action and reaction forces are equal but oppositely directed
Quantities in Mechanics
Scalar – possess magnitude only (area, mass, and time)

Vectors – having both magnitude and direction (force, moment,

displacement, velocity, acceleration, and momentum)

Tensors – having magnitude and require two or more directions

Units and Dimensions
• Absolute Metric (MKS)

Length – meter (m)

Time - seconds (sec)
Force – newton (N)
Mass – kilogram (kg)
Schematic and Free-Body
Diagrams

A sketch of the isolated body which shows the forces

acting upon it.
Topic 2
Force Vectors and Equilibrium of Particles
Resultants of Force System
-is describe as the total amount of force
acting on the object or body along with the
direction of the body.

The resultant force is zero when the object is

at rest or it is traveling in a uniform velocity
throughout.
R = √Rx²+Ry²
where:
R = resultant force
Rx = summation of forces along x (ΣFx)
Ry = summation of forces along y (ΣFy)
F1, F2,…. = forces applied
Topic 3

Moment of Force
What is the Moment of Force?

- is
defined as the product of the magnitude
of the force by the perpendicular distance
from the point of action
Varignon’s Theorem

- states
that the moment of a force is
equivalent to the sum of the moments of its
components.
