color and sad on the other. Then weave the
strips like a mat. Be creative.
As you look at your work of art, think about how
the event in your life—both happy and sad—
molded you into who you are now.

Question:
1.Did they help you become a better person?
2.Did they encourage you to live a more
meaningful life?

Now remove one of the colored strips.

INQUIRE AND
DISCOVER
Have you ever wondered about how nothing seems to last for ever?
Object get worn out until they can't be used anymore, food and drinks get
expired, and we grow up. These point to one very important reality condition:
we are temporal beings or " being oriented towards death."
The very thought of death and the mystery surrounding it certainly
cause a lot of grief and anxiety to a person, but it is an essential element in
the human condition which definitely deserves attention. Only by reflecting
on the reality of death can we begin to explore and understand the meaning
of our existence.
DEAT
H
•Commonly understood as the end of bodily
function which signals the end of a person's
life.
•It also refers to the separation of the body and
the spirit.
>Body - Is bound by the law of time and
space and is subject to growth, death, and
decay.
>Spirit - continue to exist even after the body
has passed.
•Self-determination - the capacity to choose and act for
oneself

As a biological being bond by natural law and

inevitability of death, we cannot stop aging and eventual
decline our bodies. However, we can definitely choose to
spend our lives doing good and reasonable things even
go against what is good. The preson, therefore, is the
author and protagonist who determines the
development and conclusion of his or her life story.
•Temporal existence - means that his or her life is
temporary; he or she is not a being who existed
permanently and for eternity.

Accepting the fact that we have a limited

time in this world allows us to determine the
course of our life - to paint a picture of how our life
will progress and how we envision it to end. The
key is to live life in the best way as possible way
we can - by being excellent persons.
EN

01
Terminus - means the full stop
or end of the line.

02
- for them, life ends
and nothing follows.

Telos - means "goal, purpose,

or fullfilment."
Although we are oriented toward our death,
death is not the goal of life. The human person
is not born into this world just so he or her
could die. Man is put on this earth to live a
meaningful life, to be virtuous, and achieve
excellence. With in this mind, we can look two
experiences which make us reflect on the
meaning of life : happiness and suffering.
HAPPINESS
•Is a state of being and not merely and emotional experience or
chosen mental attitude.
•We are made truly happy by things who are good. On the other
hand, what is false and evil does not make a person happy.
•Ancient Greek philosophy considers happiness as an achievement
and it must be gained by living a productive and moral life.
• Religious philosophers considered happiness as a union of God.
•Contemporary views define happiness as "whole satisfaction," based
on our evaluation of our overall lige experiences.
•Has a social element, as we should not only be concerned about our
own happiness, but also the well-being of others.
As an embodied spirit, we must also consider the goods or sources of
happiness which are proper to a person.

• Noble Good - Pursued for it's own sake; it is good in itself. Love and
friendship are some example.
• Useful Good - Considered good so long as it serves as a means to an
end; it's goidness os only found only from what it can provide. Example, money
is good as it can buy you something.
• Pleasurable Good - Is good so long as it provides some form of pleasure,
though it does not have to be physical. It must be understood that a specific
good cannot be categorized strictly under one kind. Example, friendship
maybe noble good because it is good to be a friend to someone. However,
pursuing it with incorrect intentions (e.g., befriending someone for academic or
career advancement) makes it only a useful good.
SUFFE
R
PHYSICAL MENTAL
•Involves emotional and mental states such as
•When we experience physical
depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness, and
sensations such as discomfort,
grief.
hunger, distress, and pain.
•Cause by unexpected situations in life such
•Often cause by injury, disease, and lack
as sudden changes in lifestyle, loss of
of basic needs
employment, stressful situations, and grief
caused by the death of a loved one.
SUFFERING
•Suffering is necessary because it helps
existence. Without it, we are unable to grow
and improve, and our positive experiences
lose meaning and significance.
•Difficult are not without reason. Theycan
brimg good thing even if we do not fully
understand our circumstances at present. Even
if the outcome of difficulty is unfavorable,
dealing with suffering can improve our attitude
towards life and other people.
Reflecting on the reality of death enables us to think of
how we can best live a meaningful life. We find meaning in life
when we open ourself to others. A person lives truly meaningful
life wheb he or she luves unity and harmony with other than
themselves. Life is a gift given to each person and it is
important to turn this life into gift for others as well.
