FLUIDS

•Matter, whether solid, liquid, or

gas exhibits both mechanical and
thermal properties.
•The fluid has the ability to flow
and has the property that allows
objects to sink or float.
•states of matter- liquid,
gas, and plasma-
collectively called fluids.
• The study of the properties of fluids
is called fluids mechanics.
• Hydrostatics or fluid statics deals
with fluid at rest.
• Hydrodynamics or fluid dynamics
deals with the fluid in motion.
•Mass density, or simply density is a
property of matter defined as the
ratio of its mass (m) to its volume
(V).
• It is denoted by the Greek letter rho
(ρ)
• The SI unit for density is kg/m3, while
its cgs unit is g/cm3. The density of
water at 40C is 1.0 g/cm3 or 1000
kg/m3. Note that 1 g/cm3 is equal to
1 ml.
• Different substances have different
densities. Gases are the least dense
because their molecules are farther
apart compared to those of solids and
liquids.
DENSITY OF SOLID
• To determine the density of a solid, one needs to know its
mass and volume.
• The mass of a solid may be determined by using a weighing
scale. For regular-shaped objects, the volume may be
determined from their dimensions. For irregular-shaped
objects, the volume may be determined using the
displacement method.
• In the displacement method, the object is dipped into a
container with liquid (e.g. water) The volume of the liquid that
the object displaced is its volume.
•A 0.854 kg cylinder has a
diameter of 13.4 cm and a
height of 25.2 cm. What is the
density of this cylinder?
DENSITY OF LIQUID
• The density of a liquid is usually determined by using a
bottle called a pycnometer with a known volume capacity.
• The pycnometer is weighted (in terms of mass) twice: (1)
when it is empty and (2) when it is filled with a given liquid.
• The mass of the liquid is the difference between the two
masses.
• A 235 ml pycnometer has a mass of
500 g when empty and 670 g when
filled with an unknown liquid. What
is the density of the liquid in kg/m3?
DENSITY OF IDEAL GASES
PRESSURE

• The pressure is defined as the

magnitude of the force acting
perpendicular per unit area of the
area
•Activity 2: Density Problem
• Solve the following:

• 1. An aluminum sphere has a diameter of 15.6 cm AND A

DENSITY OF 15KG/M3. what is its mass?
2. A person contains 7 L of blood. Blood is composed of 55
percent plasma and
45 percent of blood cells by volume. The density of blood
plasma is approximately 1025 kg/m3 and the density of the
blood cells circulating in the blood is approximately 1125
kg/m3. Determine the mass of the blood and blood cells in
seven liters of human blood. (Hint: 1L = 0.001 m3)
3. A plastic container has a mass of
55g when empty and 175 g when filled
with alcohol. If the density of alcohol is
0.79 g/ml, what is its volume?
4. What is the resulting density when
you mix 5.0 L of ethyl alcohol and 12.0
L water?
