Electronic Structure and Periodicity
learning objectives
01 Explain the periodic
recurrence of similar
properties among elements in
the periodic table
02 Describe covalent and ionic
bonding
Periodic table
In 1869, Russian chemist Dmitri
Mendeleev published the first
version of a periodic table of
elements. The periodic table
consists of elements arranged
in order of increasing atomic
number and in a manner that
those with recurring properties
are clustered.
Periodic table
It consists of 18
columns called groups
or families, and rows
called periods or series.
Elements under the
same group share
similar properties.
Periodic table
Periodic table
It can also be divided
into blocks which
represent the orbital
occupied by an
element’s outermost
electron.

LET’S BOND WITH IONIC AND
COVALENT COMPOUNDS
COMPOUNDS
• are formed when two or more
elements combine
• elements combine to form a
more stable substance
• elements are held together
by chemical bonds
CHEMICAL BONDING

A lasting attraction
between atoms,
ions, or molecules
that enables the
formation of
chemical
compounds.
IMPORTANCE OF CHEMICAL BONDING

Everything is formed
by the chemical bond.
Examples: foods,
plants, animals, etc.
TWO TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS

Ionic Bonds

It is formed through the

complete transfer of
electrons from one atom to
another atom.

It exists between metals

and nonmetals.
WHY DO ATOMS BOND?

IONS

Ions formed after a metal atom transfer its valence electron to non metal atom.
TAKE
NOTE!
It is the electron found in
the outermost shell of an
atom.

valence electrons)

TWO TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS

Covalent Bonds
It is called a molecular
bond.
It is a chemical bond
that involves the sharing
of electron pairs between
atoms.
It occurs when two non-
metals bond together.
TWO TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS
Non Metals

They have strong energy attractions or high

electronegativity compared to metals.
IONS

Ions are formed as atoms gain or

lose electrons.
IONS

Metals tend to lose electrons because

they have low electronegativity
ELECTRONEGATIVITY
It is the ability of the atom to attract electron.
