DISCUSS:
The Right to Food: An Important Need for
Everyone
Everyone has the right to eat nutritious
meals. Food is very important because we need it
to live.
The right to food is something everyone in
the world should have. This means that everyone
When we recognize this right, we show that every
person is important and deserves to be treated
fairly. We can ask for this right, and it is important
for governments and groups to help make sure
everyone gets enough food. Everyone needs to
work together to ensure that every person has
access to healthy food.
What does it mean to have enough food?
Everyone – men, women, and children- should
have regular access to healthy food every day.
Here are four important things to know about food
security:

1. Food must be Available – There should be

enough food for everyone in the community.
2. Food must be Accessible – Everyone should be
able to get food. This can be through growing their
own food or having enough money to buy it.
3. Access to food must be stable – People should
be able to get food all the time, even during difficult
times like wars or natural disasters.
4. Food must be healthy – The food we eat should
be safe and clean, especially the water we drink.
To develop properly, children must be able to
receive appropriate nutrition. Nourishment and meals
must be nutritionally balanced and helpful to their
physical and intellectual development.
Balanced meals and nourishment are based on
the right amounts of nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins,
fats, minerals, vitamins, fiber, and water. This way, one
can prevent malnutrition and the issues that come with
over eating or nutritional deficiencies.
Activity 3

Directions: Draw an apple ( ) if the

statement is correct, and an ice cream

( )if it is incorrect.
___1. Everybody has the right to nutritious foods.
___2. Governments and organizations must ignore the
necessity for everyone to have enough food.
___3. Children must be able to get the right nourishment in
order to develop normally.
___4. Everyone should have food to eat all the time. This is
especially important during hard times, like when there are
wars or natural disasters.
___5. Our food, and especially the water we drink, must be
expensive and imported.
Generalization
1. What is the meaning of “the right to
food”?
2. What are the top four things to know
regarding food security?
3. Is it essential to eat safe and
nutritious foods? Why?

Activity 2
Read the following words and their
meanings.
High-fiber - Foods that contain a lot of
fiber, which helps with digestion and
keeps you feeling full. Examples
include fruits, vegetables, and whole
grains.
Dairy - Foods that are made from milk, such as
cheese, yogurt, and butter. Dairy products are a
source of calcium, which is important for strong
bones.
Caffeine - A natural substance found in coffee,
tea, and some soft drinks that can give you energy
and make you feel more awake. Too much caffeine
can make it hard to sleep.
Nutrition - The process of taking in food and using
it for growth, energy, and health. It is important to
eat a balanced diet to get all the nutrients your body
needs.

Balanced diet - A way of eating that includes a

variety of different foods in the right amounts to
maintain health and energy. It typically includes
Discuss:
Healthy foods for pre-teen and teenage children
include a wide variety of fresh foods from the five
food groups:
It's super important for you to eat different

kinds of foods from the five food groups. Eating a

variety of foods helps you get all the vitamins and

energy you need to grow strong and healthy.

Remember, what you eat today can affect
how you feel tomorrow and even in the future.
Eating good food now helps keep you from
getting health problems later on, like heart
issues, certain cancers, and bone problems. So
always try to choose a balanced diet with lots of
different foods to stay healthy.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are great for you because
they give you energy, vitamins, and water. They also
have special chemicals that help fight diseases. Eating a
lot of fruits and vegetables every day can help keep you
safe from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes,
and some cancers. Try to include fruits and vegetables in
every meal and snack, and choose different colors,
textures, and tastes, whether they are fresh or cooked.
Don’t forget to wash your fruits and vegetables to get
rid of any dirt or chemicals, as their peels have
important nutrients too.
Whole Grains
Eating foods that are high in fiber, like whole
grains, is good for your health. They can help lower the
chances of heart problems and can also help with
digestion. High-fiber foods make you feel full without
adding too many calories, which can help you keep a
healthy weight. Try adding whole grains to your meals,
like having a whole wheat bagel for breakfast, a sandwich
on whole wheat bread for lunch, or whole wheat pasta for
Foods like bread, pasta, rice, and oats give you energy
to grow, learn, and feel full for a longer time.
Reduced-fat dairy foods and dairy-free alternatives
During puberty, your body needs more calcium to
help build strong bones that last a lifetime. It's important to
eat different dairy foods every day, like milk, cheese, and
yogurt. If you don’t eat dairy, you can find other foods that
are high in calcium, such as tofu, broccoli, nuts, seeds,
canned fish, and cereals or soy milk that have added
calcium. The main dairy foods to focus on are milk, cheese,
and yogurt because they are packed with calcium and
Eating these foods will help your bones grow strong and
healthy.
Protein
Protein is a super important nutrient that helps
your muscles and tissues grow and repair. It also helps
make enzymes and hormones, which are especially
needed during puberty when your body is changing a
lot. To get enough protein, you need to eat enough food
to meet your energy needs. If you don't eat enough
calories, your body will use protein for energy instead of
for growth and repair.
Good sources of protein include lean meat, fish,
chicken, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts, and these
foods also provide important vitamins and minerals like
iron and omega-3 fatty acids that help you grow and
learn.
Healthy Drinks for You!
Water is the healthiest drink you can have, and
it's also the cheapest! Most tap water even has
fluoride, which helps keep your teeth strong. Milk is
another great option, especially for teenagers, because
it's full of calcium that helps your bones grow. Our
bodies need a lot of water; for example, an adult has
about 31 liters of water inside them, while a one-year-
old child has nearly 8 liters.
Drinking enough water is super important because we
can only live a few days without it, and it helps our
bodies stay healthy by making cells and keeping us
hydrated.
Foods to Avoid or Limit
You should try to stay away from junk foods
because they are not healthy for you. Junk foods
include things like potato chips, burgers, fries, pizza,
cakes, chocolate, candies, biscuits, doughnuts, and
pastries. These foods have a lot of salt, fat, and sugar,
but not much fiber or nutrients, which can lead to
weight gain and health problems like type-2 diabetes.
It's also best to limit drinks like fruit juice,
sports drinks, flavored water, soft drinks, and
flavored milk because they are high in sugar and
can cause tooth decay.
It's important to limit processed foods. Some
processed meats, like hot dogs and Vienna
sausages, have chemicals called nitrites that can
be bad for your health. Additionally, many canned
foods have linings with chemicals that can increase
blood pressure and may raise the risk of cancer, so
it's better to eat fresh and healthy foods instead.
Finally, try to reduce or avoid foods and drinks
with caffeine, like coffee, tea, energy drinks, and
chocolate, because they can make it hard for your body
to absorb calcium and can disrupt your sleep and focus
at school.
