Introduction :-

• Like humans,plants need

a specific amount of
minerals.If the needed
amount of minerals is not
provided then
DEFICIENCIES occurs.
• Without sufficient
essential nutrients, plants
will not grow well and
show various symptoms
to express the deficiency.
1.Nitrogen
• Nitrogen is one of the major
nutrients commonly applied as
fertilisers. Plants absorb
Nitrogen in the form of
ammonium or nitrate which can
be readily dissolved in water
and leached away from soil.
Whole leaves turn yellow,
starting from the lower to
upper leaves.
2.Phosphorus
• Phosphorus is the
second major
component in
fertilisers. Plants
absorb Phosphorus
in the form of
phosphate.
• Phosphorus is
needed by plants Purple or bronze discolouration in
to promote the upper and lower sides of older
photosynthesis leaves.
3.Potassium
• Potassium is the third major
component in fertilisers. Plants
absorb Potassium as an ion
• Potassium is needed by the
plants to promote formation of
sugars for protein synthesis,

Browning or yellowing on
leaf edges of newly
matured leaves.
4.Zinc
• Zinc is needed
to activate
plant growth
regulators.
Yellowing between veins
and bronze spots in
younger leaves.
Nutrient Symptoms Disea
se
Nitrogen General chlorosis of entire plant Red leaf
to a light green followed by cotton
yellowing of older leaves
proceeding towards younger
leaves. Plants become spindly,
stunted
Phosporus Purple or bronze colouration on Dwarf
the underside of older leaves due cotton
to the accumulation of the
pigment, Anthocyanin. Affected
plants develop very slowly and
are stunted compared to normal
Potassium Leaf edge chlorosis Curling of leaf
on new matured
leaves tips
Zinc Chlorosis, bronzing or Chlorosis
mottling of younger
leaves. Interveinal
chlorosis of the young
leaves followed by
reduced shoot growth
with short internodes

Magnesium Older leaves are Interveinal

chlorotic in between
veins, often known as chlorosis
interveinal chlorosis. In
severe deficiency,
plant growth rate
drops, leaf size is
reduced, and lower
