LESSON 3
FREEHAND
DRAWING
▪
LEARNING GOALS
At the end of the lesson, you
should be able to:
▪ determine the two types of
freehand drawing; and
▪ identify the drawing’s
techniques applied in given
illustrations.
WHAT IS A FREEHAND DRAWING?
Do you have any idea what a freehand
drawing is?
Well, it is a style of drawing made
without the use of guiding or measuring
instruments, as distinguished from
mechanical or geometrical drawing;
also, a drawing thus executed.
TWO TYPES OF FREEHAND DRAWING
▪Artists’ Drawings
▪Technical men and skilled
industrial workers
TWO TYPES OF FREEHAND DRAWING
▪ Artists’ Drawings – are
commonly freehand drawings;
that is, drawings made without
the use of drawing instruments
or straightedges. Such drawings
are made in perspectives or
point of view; that is, pictorial
drawings as seen or observed by
the artists's eyes. As his specialty
medium he utilizes either a lead
pencil, charcoal or carbon pencil,
dark ink, pastel, oil paint, water
color, or crayon.
TWO TYPES OF FREEHAND DRAWING
▪ Artist's Drawing: An
artist's drawing is
primarily aimed at
conveying emotion,
creativity, and artistic
expression. The focus is
on aesthetics, conveying a
message, or evoking a
feeling through the use of
artistic techniques and
styles.
TWO TYPES OF FREEHAND DRAWING
▪ Technical men and skilled
industrial workers - Technical
men and industrial workers, on
the other hand, make working
sketches which are also freehand
drawings but are shown in a
special type of drawing called
orthographic projection.
Generally, an object is shown in
three orthographic views—top,
front, and side views.
TWO TYPES OF FREEHAND DRAWING
▪ Technical Men's
Sketches: Technical
sketches, often referred to
as technical drawings or
blueprints, are created for
practical and functional
purposes. They aim to
accurately and precisely
represent an object,
design, or concept for
engineering, architecture,
manufacturing, or other
technical applications.
FREEHAND DRAWING
▪ A synonym for freehand drawing is sketch.
All technical sketches are freehand
drawings, but not all freehand drawings
are technical sketches.
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Horizontal lines – are lines parallel to the lower
edge of the drawing paper. For instance, are
drawn from left to right.
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Vertical lines – are sketched from the top
downward.
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Inclined lines – are also generally sketched
from left to right.
MORE PROPERTIES
▪ A long line drawn with arm movement.
MORE PROPERTIES
▪ A long line drawn in segments
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Perpendicular lines – are lines which make an
angle of 90 degrees with each other. But not all
perpendicular lines are vertical or horizontal, as
shown in figure b
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Parallel lines – are lines which never meet even
if they are prolonged or extended to any
desired length. These parallel lines may be
vertical, horizontal, or inclined.
PENCIL TECHNIQUES
▪ Curved lines – or curves, are regular or
irregular.
