Geographic Information System(GIS):

 Geographical information system is a system that collects displays ,

manages and analyzes geographic i.e. spatial and non-spatial data

Or

• GIS is a computer based tool that analyzes, stores manipulates and

visualizes geographic information , usually in a map.
COMPONENTS OF GIS

1. HARDWARE
2. SOFTWARE
3. DATA
4. PEOPLE
5. METHODS
APPLICATION OF GIS
SOFTWARE IN GIS
SOURCES OF ERRORS IN GIS

1. There are two types of errors in GIS

Errors in GIS
a) DATA PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS
b) DATA OUTPUT

If the errors occurred in manipulation and analysis of GIS data ,

the GIS output may be inaccurate in the form of paper map or a
digital database.
a) DATA PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS

a) SCALE
• In cartograph scale may become error.
• Cartographers should always adopt the scale of work to the
level of detail needed in their project
b) Age of data
When data sources are too old , some , big part the information
base may have changed.
c) Formatting
• At the time of formatting data for processing may occurs
errors.
• Example changes in scale , reprojection , import/export data.
d) Quantitative and qualitative errors
• Topological errors are become sources of errors in GIS
ASSIGNMENT NO 3

1. Explain SOURCES OF ERRORS IN GIS

2. List APPLICATION OF GIS
3. List the COMPONENTS OF GIS
