UNIT 3 APPLICATION SOFTWARE
UNIT OUTCOMES
At the end of this unit, learners will be able to:
 Indent a paragraph.
 Align text by using icons on the menu bar and selecting paragraph from formatting
menu. ƒ
 Apply bullets and numbers in text.
 Insert and delete page break and page number in a document.
 Add and delete headers and footers in a document
 Manipulate data in spread sheet
 Create a presentation in PowerPoint 3
3.1 Using Application Software
The software used by general public users in their daily tasks most often is
application software. Some examples of application software are:
 ƒWord processing software
 ƒ Presentation software
 ƒ Spreadsheet software
 ƒ Desktop publishing software
 ƒ Database management software

Application software may consist of a single program, such as Microsoft Notepad, for
writing and editing simple text. It may also consist of a collection of programs called a
software package, which work together to accomplish a task.
Application software may also include a larger collection of programs (a software suite),
related but independent programs, which have a common user interface such as Microsoft
Office Suite.
3.2 Word Processing
Word Processing refers to the act of using a computer to create, edit, save and print
documents including, but not limited to, textual reports, letters, memos, newsletters and
brochures. One example of a Word Processor is Microsoft Word; other word processing
applications

Steps of Word Processing


Some of the functions of word processing software include: ƒ

 Creating, editing, saving and printing documents. ƒ


 Copying, pasting, moving and deleting text within a document. ƒ
 Formatting text such as font type, bolding, underlining or italicizing. ƒ
 Creating and editing tables. ƒ
 Inserting elements such as illustrations and photographs from other
software.
 Correcting spelling and grammar. ƒ
 Providing different templates for repetitive tasks.

3.2.1 Starting Microsoft Office Word 2016 program in Windows 10
To start Office 2016 program in window 10, you can follow either of the following
methods.

Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar A pop-up menu appears Click the tile
that represents Microsoft Word 2016 Click on a Blank document and blank document
will appear (See Figure 3.2 in the text book).

A paragraph is a collection of words, numbers or any combination of them. It is
organized in a section that describes a particular idea or point.

3.3 Manipulating Data in Spreadsheet
Spreadsheet software is application software capable of organizing, storing and
analyzing data in tabular form.
One of the most powerful features of Excel is its ability to calculate numerical
information using formulas. Excel can add, subtract, multiply and divide. In this section,
we see how to use cell references to create simple formulas.

3.4 Creating Presentation
3.4.1 Opening PowerPoint

The most common choices for opening a presentation after launching


PowerPoint application are: ƒ
New - allows you to open a blank presentation or you may choose from options of
Templates and Themes. ƒ
Open - lets you navigate to an existing file to view and/or modify a presentation that has
already been created. ƒ
Recent - displays a list of your most recently created presentations and their file locations.

Viewing Presentations
After adding different animation and transitions of the slide, There are four different
ways to view your presentation in PowerPoint: normal, slide sorter, notes page and
reading views. The views can be accessed using the buttons in the status bar or the View
Tab on the ribbon
