Othello Analysis

Characters: MICHAEL CASSIO

Who is he?

• Michael Cassio is a lieutenant to Othello

• Iago hates him for his promotion
• He is known to be a ladies man, who is charming, gentlemanly
and flirtatious
• Has quite a good reputation among the other people in play,
often being said to be an honourable man.
Analysis: he is……
1. Gullible

2. a Casanova

3. Dishonorable

4. Promiscuous

5. a Coward

6. Two-faced

7. Gallant

8. Loyal

9. Narcissistic
 Gullible
- Easily persuaded to believe something

“Not tonight, good Iago, I have very poor and unhappy brains for drinking. I could well
wish courtesy would invent some other custom of entertainment.:

• Claims to disagree with the custom of celebratory drinking

Further indulges in this custom at the mention of his superiors

was easily persuaded by the implication of bonding with superiors

• Slightly hypocritical
 a Casanova
- A man with MANY lovers

“He hath achieved a maid that paragons description and wild fame, one
that excels the quirks of blazoning pens, and, in th’ essential vesture of
creation Does tire the ingener.”
• Manner in which talks about other people’s wives is socially
unacceptable (especially in Shakespeare’s time)
• Man that’s that good with words.
• And very very flirtatious
 Dishonourable
-Bringing shame or disgrace on someone or something

“Let me go, sir, or I’ll knock you o’er the mazzard”

• He speaks barbarically to his superiors

thus bringing shame to his title and honour

 Promiscuous
- Having many transient sexual relationships

“ Alas, poor rogue, I think indeed she loves me”

• Calmness he showcases could mean that he is used to being in such a position

implies that Bianca is not the only one

• Cassio, therefore, has many non-lasting sexual relations
 Coward
-person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous/unpleasant
situations

“I think it freely, and betimes in the morning I will beseech the virtuous
Desdemona to undertake for me”
• He goes to his general’s wife instead of the general himself (lacks the
courage to endure the unpleasant conversation with Othello)
 Two-faced
- Insincere and deceitful

“Tis such another fitchew. Marry, a perfumed one– What do you mean
by this haunting for me?”
• Told Bianca he was going to see her that night; later spoke to her as if
he’d never bed her.
• ‘haunt’: manifest itself (at a place) regularly
• Metaphor: comparing her to a ghost/something that is unwanted
• Irony: prior he made arrangements for them to meet and now he's
treating her like trash
 Gallant
-Charmingly attentive and chivalrous to women

“(kisses Emilia) Let it not gall your patience, good Iago, that I extend
my manners.”
• Justifies his action by claiming to “extend his manners” (though he
kissed a woman in front of her husband which was very disrespectful
back then )
 Loyal
- Strong feeling of support or allegiance

“to the health of our general”

• ‘drunk men’s words are sober thoughts’

alcohol distorts one’s actions, leading them to act impulsively

before action or thoughts are registered by the brain.
 Narcissistic
-high sense of own importance

-lacking ability to care for others

“Reputation, reputation, reputation! Oh, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the
immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial.”
• 1. Truly cares for nothing but HIS STATUS

“I marry her! What? A customer? Prithee bear some charity to my wit. Do not think it
so unwholesome. Ha, ha,ha.”
• 2. Lacks the ability to care for Bianca and her feelings

• May be a bit classist– behaves as though Bianca is below him. Is it because she's a
prostitute?
Thank you for watching and good luck :)
