Introduction ::

The Holography technique was invented in 1948 by the

Hungarian Dennis Gabor
The technique have been evolving in the last few years
It promises to be the better data storing system of the future

Holographic storage is computer storage that uses lasers to

store computer-generated data in three dimensions.

Holographic storage -- also called holostorage, three-

dimensional (3D) storage or a holographic data storage
system (HDSS) -- is a volumetric storage system. Where
other optical storage mediums like CDs, DVDs or hard disks
only store data on their surface, holographic data storage
goes beneath the surface to use the entire recording
medium, creating a holographic image of the data.
Why we should use Holographic Data
Storage ::
• Microsoft estimates that about 125 zettabytes
of data will be generated annually by 2024
[A zettabyte is about one trillion gigabytes]
• Storing the data in a cost-effective way is a
big challenge
• HDDs have slow data transfer speeds
• Flash storage is faster but more expensive
• Holographic media can last for about 50 years.
• High transfer rates. Holographic memory
devices offer up to 1 gigabyte per second.
• High capacities. Holographic storage devices
have a potential storage capacity of about 1
terabyte of data per square inch.
How Holographic storage Works ::

• Holographic storage uses green

lasers to write data pages
• These pages have hundreds of
kilobytes of data in the form of a
hologram
• The method involves two laser
beams
• One projects the data encoded in
an image
• The other known as the references
beam, meets the first beam to
create a hologram
• The data pages can be read by
shining the reference laser beam
• The hologram can also be erased
with UV light
• The holograms occupy a small area
• Multiple data pages can be written
or accessed just by changing the
angle of light
• More data can be stored in
Real Life Uses of
Holographic ::
1. Hologram in Museum :
Just imagine that you are able to accurately
recreate almost any historical figure as if they lived not so long
ago.
2. Education :
In 2015, the Nobel laureate and professor of physics at Stanford
University, Karl Wieman , spoke at Nanyang Technological University
(Singapore) without leaving the United States.
In 2013, St George's University of London introduced holograms capable of
displaying the working organs of a human body. The presentation showcased
three-dimensional images of kidneys four meters in length, a skull, and other
parts of the body.
3. Spatial navigation :
In 2017, scientists from the Munich University of
Technology developed a method for obtaining three-dimensional holograms
using a Wi-Fi router. The method described in the study allows for creating
copies of premises by displaying objects around them. This technology can be
used to find and rescue victims trapped under an avalanche or within
collapsed buildings.
4. Marketing and direct sales :
Product holograms are a new marketing ploy to grab the
attention of customers. With the help of a hologram, you can enlarge a 3D
copy of a product and make it viewable from all sides. This is convenient for
customers who want to see their desired purchase in full detail.
5. Music shows :
A hologram of Eric Prydz's face acted as the closing of his EPIC
5.0 show in London, 2017. The performance of the popular French DJ was
accompanied by an impressive laser show. At the end of the evening, over
300 lasers formed a volumetric hologram of the DJ's head. From then on, the
DJ’s shows were always accompanied by the
use of holograms to create a unique atmosphere.
6. Telecommunications :
In 2017, Verizon (USA) and Korea Telecom
(South Korea) made the first holographic call using 5G technology. To make
the call possible, two holograms were formed. Both fully capable of
conveying the user's emotions and gestures.
Ongoing Researches On Holograms ::

The Haptic Tech That Could Let You Touch The Person You're
Skyping With.
This was the magic and wonderment of HaptoClone, the
creation of Shinoda-Makino Lab at the University of Tokyo.
Why has holographic storage not become available to the public?

Holographic storage technology has faced

challenges in terms of cost, complexity,
and the development of practical consumer
applications.
Conclusion ::

In conclusion, holographic data storage

presents a promising avenue for addressing the ever-
growing demand for high-capacity and fast-access
storage solutions. Its unique ability to store vast
amounts of data in three dimensions offers
advantages over traditional storage methods,
including increased storage density and faster data
retrieval speeds. While still in its infancy, ongoing
research and development efforts continue to refine
holographic data storage technologies, bringing them
closer to practical implementation. As advancements
continue, holographic storage has the potential to
revolutionize the way we store and access data,
paving the way for a more efficient and scalable
storage infrastructure in the future.
