8Ea – Burning Fuels – Part 2

Lesson Objectives:
Grade A
Describe the reactions of hydrocarbons with
oxygen
Grade B
Use a word equation to model combustion of
hydrocarbons.

Keywords: Hydrogen, combustion,

molecule, fuel.
Describe the reactions of
hydrocarbons with oxygen (A)
• Hydrocarbons are a group of
hydrogen
compounds that contain only the
carbon________ and ______.
elements
• Fuels made from oil and natural gas
are all examples of hydrocarbons.
They include;
– Petrol
– Diesel
– Butane
– Methane
Describe the reactions of
hydrocarbons with oxygen (A)
• The simplest hydrocarbon is methane.
• Build a molecule of methane (CH4) using
the molymods. C is the black bead and
you should use the short bonds to connect
the atoms.
Describe the reactions of
hydrocarbons with oxygen (A)
• When methane reacts with oxygen all
the C-H bonds break and the C atoms
and H atoms combine with oxygen
O2 (__) to
CO2 (___) and water
form carbon dioxide H2O (___).

methane + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water

Q. What would the symbol equation be?

CH4 + O2  CO2 + H2O
Describe the reactions of
hydrocarbons with oxygen (A)
methane + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water
CH4 + O2  CO2 + H2O

In fact 2 molecules of H2O are produced;

CH4 + O2  CO2 + 2H2O

Q. How many O2 molecules must take part?
