The document discusses brain-computer interfaces (BCI). It defines BCI as a direct communication pathway between the brain and an external device. It explains that BCI works by using electrodes on the scalp to capture brain signals, which are then decoded by a computer and used to complete tasks. The document outlines different BCI approaches, advantages like helping disabled people, disadvantages like health risks, and applications in areas such as communication for disabled individuals and monitoring attention. It concludes that BCI is a promising emerging technology that could help rehabilitation and enhance human performance.

Agenda
Introduction What is an EEG ? BCI Model How it works BCI approach Advantages Disadvantages Applications Projects and Research Conclusion

Introduction
Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a direct communication pathway between brain and external device. Brain is able to create motor memory for controlling virtual devices just as a memory does for the specimens body. Here the specimen with electrodes implanted in their brains use thoughts to control cursor. Multiple electrodes spreads over greater area to obtain neuronal signals to drive a BCI.

What is an EEG ?
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a measure of the brain's voltage fluctuations as detected from scalp electrodes. It is an approximation of the cumulative electrical activity of neurons

BCI Model
BCI system is based on the

classification of motor imagery related brain activity changes in ongoing EEG

Neurons from the brain carry the signals to the corresponding body part Electrodes are placed on the scalp to capture the on flowing signals from the brain to various other parts

BCI Model

How it works ?
Any thought in the brain produces an impulse that is transmitted by the neurons to the destined body part

The decoded signals are manipulated by the computer as instructions.

These instructions are executed to complete the task.

These brain signals are recorded and reproduced using EEG technique. The reproduced signals are transmitted to decoding system.

BCI approaches

Invasive
Invasive approach involves direct implantation of electrodes into the brain by neurosurgery.

Non Invasive
Electroencephalography In conventional scalp EEG, the recording is obtained by placing electrodes on the scalp with a conductive gel or paste, usually after preparing the scalp area by light abrasion to reduce impedance due to dead skin cells. Many systems typically use electrodes, each of which is attached to an individual wire.

Technique is very beneficial in field of severe disease, brain & neural injuries.
provides daily life support to physically disabled and aged people, making use of bioengineering control devices & robots to grant healthy life for elderly people. assists scientist to understand how the brain memory, internal connection works can be understood to a great extent. Assists devices to help disabled people.

Disadvantages : Requires a high mental concentration Can pose a threat to mental stability of the subject May result in chronic strokes in severe cases There is a risk of severe mental infections such as meningitis

Applications

Provides a communication path for physically disable peoples to control environment, and movement restoration. Provides additional channel of control in computer games. Monitors attention in long-distance drivers, sends out alert for aircraft pilots.

Develops intelligent relaxation devices.

In neuroprosthetic field BCI deals in building and surgically inserting devices for restoring injured parts of the brain and neural injuries. Example Bionic ear employed to help people with impaired hearing.

Conclusion
A potential remedial tool. BCI is an advancing technology promising pattern shift in areas like Machine Control, Human Enhancement, Virtual reality and etc. So, its potentially high impact technology. Several potential applications of BCI hold promise for rehabilitation and improving performance, such as treating emotional disorders (for example, depression or anxiety), easing chronic pain, and overcoming movement disabilities due to stroke. Will enable us to achieve singularity very soon. Intense R&D in future to attain intuitive efficiency.
