When you request an UberX ride in NYC, it may be fulfilled by a Taxi driver. The price you pay for is largely determined by state and city government-mandated pricing rules, taxes, fees, and surcharges.
Some of these rules are complicated, so we want to walk you through them and explain the prices you’re experiencing:
NYS Congestion Fee (Below 96th St):
For trips starting in, ending in, or passing through Manhattan (below 96th Street), there is a congestion surcharge of $2.50 per trip. The charge will appear on your receipt as “NYS Congestion Fee (Below 96th St).” The full amount of the surcharge will be sent to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), as mandated by NY State legislation. This money does not go to the driver or Uber.
MTA Congestion Fee (Below 60th St):
For trips starting in, ending in, or passing through Manhattan (below 60th Street) completed in a TLC licensed vehicle, a congestion surcharge of $0.75 per trip is applied. The charge will appear on your receipt as “MTA Congestion Fee (Below 60th St).” The full amount of the surcharge will be sent to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), as mandated by NY State law. This fee is in addition to the NYS Congestion Fee (Below 96th St).
Improvement Surcharge
For all trips that start in the state of New York, there is an improvement surcharge of $1.00 per trip. The charge will appear on your receipt as “Taxi Improvement Surcharge.” The full amount of the surcharge will be sent to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), as mandated by NY State legislation. This money does not go to the driver or Uber.
MTA State Surcharge
For New York trips ending in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange or Putnam Counties, there is an MTA State Surcharge of $0.50 per trip. The charge will appear on your receipt as “MTA Surcharge.” The full amount of the surcharge will be sent to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), as mandated by NY State legislation. This money does not go to the driver or Uber.
