In April 2023, conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum and other parts of the country. The warring sides turned bustling neighborhoods into battle zones, killing thousands and trapping civilians in their homes without adequate food, water, and medicines. The continuation of this conflict today has created one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises. More than 25 million people are in need of assistance, including 14 million children. It has also created the largest displacement crisis in the world, with more than 9 million people displaced inside and outside the country as of early June 2024.

The United States continues to be the largest donor of humanitarian aid to the Sudan response, providing more than $1.4 billion in humanitarian assistance since October 2022, including more than $980 million in USAID funding. We remain steadfast in our support for the people of Sudan and call for the RSF and SAF to cease hostilities, end their interference in humanitarian operations, and facilitate safe and unhindered access for humanitarian staff and supplies to reach populations in need across borders and across lines of conflict.
