Family says Amazon driver stole their 16-year-old dog
BURGIN, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Burgin is a small, quiet town right outside of Harrordsburg, where neighbors are like family and crime is not common.
“Never had any issues out here ever,” Joseph Latimer said.
Joseph and Mariel Donovan have lived in Burgin for about four years. They moved in with Joseph’s grandfather to help care for him during the end of his life. Along with his grandfather also came his dog Star.
“She was kinda his best, best buddy and she’s a part of the family,” he said.
The 16-year-old English setter is somewhat of a celebrity on their street. It’s a quiet road and Star has grown up visiting her neighbors and spending time outside.
“Lately in her life she really doesn’t wander much,” Joseph said. “She just sticks between the three houses.”
Star often visits her neighbor Chad. He lives across the street and has had a relationship with Star for a while now. He even has a dog bed for her when she comes to visit. Recently, the visits haven’t been too often.
“They cook her scrambled eggs, they let her in the house to feed her, they play with her and love on her,” Mariel said.
On January 17th, Star’s normal routine took a turn. A woman allegedly picked her up from Chad’s porch, put her in the car and drove off. The Latimer’s say this wasn’t the first time this woman tried to steal Star.
“She actually blocked me from leaving my driveway,” Mariel said.
Back on December 3rd, Mariel said she caught this woman in the act. This woman is allegedly an Amazon driver who told Mariel she was taking her dog.
Eventually, the Latimer’s said law enforcement got involved. Star was returned home and everything went back to normal.
Until January 17th, when that same woman allegedly came back.
Now, the Latimer’s are working with Mercer County Police and Amazon.
“The last phone call we had with them was like an hour-long phone call where they tracked down the delivery driver on the day where they saw that she went off-route,” Joseph said. “[She] went about 300 meters off the road to an address she wasn’t supposed to be at to get the dog.”
They say they’re heartbroken. They want their 16-year-old dog to have a peaceful end to her life in the home she grew up in.
“She just doesn’t know what’s going on, I’m just worried that it’s going to kill her,” Joseph said.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office tells ABC 36 News it is working with Amazon to identify the woman in the video, and hopefully, return Star to the Latimers.
