Getting Involved

Getting involved on campus is a key part of the college experience. Luckily, the College of Communication and Information houses several student organizations to help you get involved in all things related to communication and information. The College also prepares students for the endless involvement opportunities across UK’s campus and beyond.
 

CI Student Organizations

Ad Club
Ad Club

As a student chapter of the American Advertising Federation, Ad Club provides students with the opportunity to learn more about the advertising field and network with advertising professionals through agency tours, professional panels, portfolio reviews, alumni talks and more. Ad Club also connects students to national AAF events like the National Student Advertising Competition, American Advertising Awards (ADDYs), career conferences and more. 

UKALA
American Library Association Student Chapter at UK

The American Library Association Student Chapter is the student organization for UK's LIS graduate students. The ALA @ UK Student Chapter seeks to enrich student’s graduate school experience by providing social, networking and professional development opportunities through leadership opportunities, conferences and fun chapter events.

CI Gamers Club
CI Gamers Club

CI Gamers Club is a student organization dedicated to the promotion of video game development and esports. The club is open to all UK students who have an interest in the arts, technology and industry of video games and esports. CIGC members meet weekly and engage in a variety of group-based collaborative activities ranging from video game design and development to competitive gameplay.

CI College Ambassador Program

The CI College Ambassador Program helps promote pride and understanding of the College of Communication and Information. Not only will ambassadors receive a scholarship each semester, but the program gives them an opportunity to use their talents and abilities in representing the College and growing as future professionals. Each ambassador is a current student enrolled in the upper division of the College of Communication and Information.

Creator Cats
Creator Cats

Creator Cats is a student organization that invites students interested in video production, music, writing and visual art to connect and collaborate with students who have similar passions. Events and showcases are held to highlight members’ projects. 

Grehan Associates
Grehan Associates

Grehan Associates is a fully functioning, student-run, marketing and communications firm through the University of Kentucky. Grehan Associates provides creative, social media, public relations, event and analytic work for their clients. They service real clients in the greater Lexington area such as Clubhouse Lexington, Sav’s African Grill, Wanderlust Aesthetics, Wildfire Yoga and many more.

UK Intercollegiate Debate Team
Intercollegiate Debate Team

The Debate Team focuses on working with students committed to excellence in college debate, helping them hone their argumentation, critical thinking and public speaking skills. The Debate Team has been active on the UK campus for over 100 years and has been a nationally competitive program since the 1950s.

KPA 2023
The Kentucky Kernel

Founded in 1908 and independent since 1972, the Kentucky Kernel is the non-profit, student-run newspaper for the University of Kentucky. The Kernel offers the most extensive news coverage of the UK campus and surrounding metropolitan area.

KRNL 2021
KRNL Lifestyle + Fashion

The mission of KRNL Lifestyle + Fashion is to promote the individuality, creativity, and uniqueness of storytelling by University of Kentucky’s students utilizing all of our publishing platforms. KRNL publishes a print magazine each semester and maintains an active online presence through their blog, podcast and more.

NABJ
National Association of Black Journalists

The University of Kentucky chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists is a nationally recognized student affiliate chapter of the NABJ committed to providing quality programming centered on diversity in the newsroom, career development and community engagement. Membership is open to all races, ethnicities and majors within CI.

PRSSA
Public Relations Student Society of America

The University of Kentucky’s chapter of PRSSA provides members with opportunities to enhance their education, broaden their network and launch their career in public relations and related industries through sessions with guest PR speakers, tours and community projects.

SPJ
Society of Professional Journalists Campus Chapter

The UK student chapter of SPJ works to promote high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism and fosters excellence among journalists. Members will have a chance to work with the professional journalists in the Bluegrass Chapter of SPJ.

WRFL
WRFL - Radio Free Lexington

WRFL is a student-run radio station on UK's campus that plays music normally unrepresented on mainstream radio stations and the Top 100 music charts. WRFL has continued bringing new and exciting information to listeners in a 100% direct fashion, with real DJs running the controls, 24/7 for more than 30 years.


Other CI Involvement Opportunities

Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Starting in 2021, the UK Office of Undergraduate Research allocated funds to each college to support undergraduate research initiatives. These funds will be centrally held by the CI Business Center to support joint and collaborative research efforts and for support of undergraduate students across units in the form of research fellowships. These funds can be used for undergraduate research at any time during the year. Learn more about how to apply for a CI Undergraduate Research Fellowship here.

 

Dean’s Student Advisory Council

The Dean’s Student Advisory Council brings together students from all majors, backgrounds and classifications in CI to form a Dean’s Student Advisory Council each academic year. The council is an opportunity to connect with College leadership, make your voice heard and have an impact on the future of CI. If interested, please contact your academic advisor.

Lambda Pi Eta
University of Kentucky
Alpha Chi Chapter

Membership in Lambda Pi Eta signifies distinguished achievement in the discipline of communication. Lambda Pi Eta chapters are communities of students and faculty that organize a wide variety of philanthropic, academic and social programs. To be eligible for admission, undergraduate students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Completed 60 credit hours
  2. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  3. Have a minimum major/pre-major GPA of 3.25
  4. Currently enrolled as a full-time student in good standing, as determined by UK’s policies
