The College of Medicine offers three surgical residency programs: general surgery, plastic surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. Each has a distinguished reputation for preparing learners for a professional surgical practice.

Chair of Surgery

William B. Inabnet III, MD, MHA, FACS, became chair of the UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery in September 2019.

Prior to accepting his appointment with the University of Kentucky, Dr. Inabnet served as the Eugene W. Friedman, MD, Professor of Surgery with the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City and as surgical director of the Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine. He also served as the system chief of endocrine surgery for the eight-hospital Mount Sinai Health System and is the founder and co-director of the Mount Sinai Adrenal Center.

An international authority in the field of minimally invasive endocrine surgery, Dr. Inabnet is a pioneer of new techniques in minimal access endocrine neck surgery as well as adrenal and pancreatic surgery. In 1998, he performed the first endoscopic thyroid resection in the U.S.

Dr. Inabnet is also a leader in the field of minimally invasive metabolic surgery with an interest in obesity, disorders of the endocrine system, and beta cell metabolism. Under his leadership, the Mount Sinai Weight Loss Surgery Program has become one of the premier programs in the world.

He completed his undergraduate and medical training at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, followed by residency training at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center and a fellowship in Surgical Endocrinology at Cochin Hospital in Paris, France.

Zwisch Scale

The department of surgery applies the pioneering surgical education assessment, The Zwisch Scale, developed by former department chair and alum, Dr. Joseph Zwischenberger, in the education and training of new surgeons in our residency and fellowship programs.

CATS Lab

The Center for Advanced Training and Simulation (CATS) Laboratory provides learners with an environment that duplicates laparoscopic set-ups they will encounter in operating rooms. Residents have access to a broad range of open and endoscopic surgical exercises. The laboratory is also equipped wi...
