           National Weather Service Newport Building

The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City, NC is located at 533 Roberts Road, Newport, NC. It has been operational since 1994 when the city of Newport granted the National Weather Service a piece of land to use for a forecasting office. The office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with 20 employees staffing the office at various times of the day.

                Conference Room

Our conference room is used for meetings with emergency managers and media as well as office tours. We are also able to host phone and web conferences in this room.

                    Radar Dome

The radar dome is located behind our main building and it houses the radar dish that sends out pulses of energy that can detect severe weather in the area up to about 125 miles from the radar. The dome protects the radar dish which is approximately 6 feet in diameter inside of the dome. It is very useful to the forecasters to determine the direction in which severe weather is heading and it also detects rotation in the atmosphere.

                     Upper Air Building

The upper air building is located to the right of the main office and it houses all of the helium needed for our weather balloons. It is also the preparation area for the weather balloon launch that occurs twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

                             Operations

The operations area at the NWS Newport houses five  supercomputer AWIPS workstations that assist the meteorologists in preparing  forecasts, watches, warnings and advisories. A variety of tools are used on these workstations to make forecast and warning products. The operations staff work rotating shifts as the NWS office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year!
