Easy Conservation Tips
Simple ways you can help preserve our island
The tiny island of Kaua'i has over 1 million visitors per year. How you treat our fragile island while you are here determines how long it will stay beautiful, have clean water, and have the resources to sustain your visits to come. You can make a difference!
Conserve
- recycle your bottles, cans, plastics, and paper- recycling locations
- take only products that you need from restaurants & lodgings (take only napkins, condiment packets, free brochures, etc. that you will use)
- don't throw away beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. when you leave. Pass them on to someone else or drop them off at a thrift store. (Thrift stores can be found in Kilauea, Wailua, Lihue, and Hanapepe)
- don't litter or leave your trash ( and YES, cigarette butts count!)
Use Less Water
- take a shower instead of a bath
- wait until you have a full load to run the dishwasher or washing machine in your vacation rental
- use towels several times before they are washed
- let the front desk know or leave a note in your room if you don't want your sheets changed daily
Save Electricity
- turn off lights and tv when you leave
- go island style- use fans or open windows instead of air conditioning
- if you do use an air conditioning, turn it off or down when you leave the room
- save fuel by avoiding unnecessary journeys
- take advantage of the island sun - line dry your clothes whenever possible
Smart Shopping
- reduce plastic bottles- instead of buying 24 small bottles, buy 1 big one and refill it.
- reuse your grocery bags
- buy local- go to the farmers markets for fresh, local food
