Po'ipu Beach Park
A.K.A. Brenneke’s, Waiohai Beach • Photo by Douglas Peebles
Recreation begins here for the south shore. There is a great protected area for swimming and snorkeling - with surf breaks offshore (for experienced surfers). Excellent facilities.
Things To Do
- Snorkeling
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Bodyboarding
- Paddling
- Beach walks
- Family days
Cool Because
Poipu has recieved numerous "top 5" beach awards - both national and worldwide. On many "winter" days when the North shore is stormy and rough, Poipu is calm like a swimming pool.
Hazards
Although the shoreline is mostly protected from large surf, dangerous conditions can exist in the water. Strong currents and waves breaking on reef. Sharp coral and slippery rocks.
Topography
Sandy and grassy shoreline protected by rocky jetties. Mixed reef and sand underwater.
Not Good For
If you are looking for privacy, Poipu might not be the spot. During warm summer months and peak holiday seasons Poipu can become very crowded.

Even though I live on the North Shore the occasional trip to the South shore is super fun. The beach park has a nice lawn and calm water for relaxing and from Shipwrecks to Mahaulepu is incredible exploring.

lovely beach but horrible surfing.

@ Erica: Yes, we would not recommend surfing at Poipu Beach Park. Try Hanalei Bay during the summer, you'll be stoked!

great site!

Actually, the surf in this area is really good if you know what you are doing. Like all surf spots - you must match the location with the ability of the surfer. Waihai is a super fun, mellow wave (but the reef is right under you).

Island born, former native, just want
to say I enjoyed your web site. Thanks for the memories.
Jan 07, 2007 3:51PM
This is a nice beach. Children have their own cove to the left (as you look at the water) and adults can enjoy snorkeling to the right. This has more open water compared to Salt pond or Lydgate so I would suggest to be a bit more experienced. Has a fun playground area for the kids.

I noticed a "no swimming" sign at Brennecke's beach on 1/10/07. It looked like a new sign. Just wondering if it was posted because of dangerous conditions or something else. Unfortunately, I noticed people were swimming anyway.
Feb 13, 2007 11:29AM
@ Jami: When the surf gets large, the lifeguards on the North Shore post "No Swimming" signs on the beach. This is intended for inexperienced ocean goers. I don't think you're going to keep Andy Irons and the local surf crew out of the water when the waves get big. That's how they like 'em!

My spouse and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai last September. I dream about it at least once a week. Poipu beach, in particular, features prominently in my dreams. I truly feel like I left a piece of myself there, and can't wait to return to reclaim it. I'm particularly excited to introduce our daughter (now just a toddler) to this magical place.
Mar 08, 2007 6:17PM
We will be visiting Kauai the first week in September. We've stayed at Poipu in the winter months and loved the snorkeling at Poipu Beach Park.
However, this time we are trying to decide whether to stay on the North Shore (near Tunnels Beach) or stay again in Poipu.
Which beach would you recommend for the best (and safest) snorkeling in September? Poipu Beach Park or Tunnels?
Are there usually turtles at Tunnels?
Thanks for your help!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 09, 2007 1:59PM
@ Lynn: As you can see in the seasonal surf trends, surf heights on the North and South shores during September are very similar. So your best and safest snorkeling will all depend on current ocean conditions while you are here.
Since this is the case, maybe you should make your decision based on what part of the island you liked better. Poipu will have closer proximity to shopping and restaurants while Tunnels will be more adventurous.
And yes, there are turtles at tunnels : )

@ Cinda: It is the surf season on the South Shore during summer. This does not mean there will be large surf everyday. Most days, this beach park will be great for swimming, just ask the lifeguard before you go into the water.
Mar 20, 2007 6:11PM
Me husband and I are planning to visit Kauai at the end of May 2007. Last time we had our honeymoon at Maui. It was just wonderful! Now someone told me that Poipu is a good place for peaceful swimming and snorkeling. Which beach do you think is best at that time of year? I'm not a grate swimmer and afraid that I will choose some "cool surf beach". That could be a disaster :(
Thank you for your help

Mar 22, 2007 11:29PM
@ Natalia: Poipu is a great place to vacation, and this beach has a good spot to learn to snorkel. But if you look at the seasonal surf trends you will see that May is the beginning of the South Shore's surf season. This does not mean that there won't be good days for snorkeling. Just be sure to check with the lifeguard at this beach or refer back to this website for daily ocean conditions.
Another option will be to drive down to the North Shore for a day of snorkeling (ocean conditions permitting). Tunnels and Ke'e have some awesome reefs.

I will be visiting Kauai the first week of July with my 4 year old and 10 year old what beach do you recommend for snorkeling and swimming?
Mar 27, 2007 11:26AM
My wife and I will be staying in Poipu the first week in May. Understanding that weather conditions change. What would normally be the best spots for a morning swim (an hour or so before we start out for the day)? 6:00 to 7:00am.
I work for the State Parks in San Diego. Silver Strand State Beach. We enjoy hikes, rain forests? If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. We're looking forward to visiting Kauai again. Sincerely Ish

My wife and I are taking our daughter and granddaughter to Poipu mid-April. We have rented a beachfront condo at Kiahuna Plantation for 8 nights and finishing with 2 nights at the Hyatt.
Here's my question/concerns. I am wanting to both snorkel and bodyboard (I'm 52). Is Kiahuna Beach appropriate for both of these in that season? Do I need to go to Poipu Beach Park for snorkeling? I thought that in previous visits that I've seen people snorkeling near the Sheraton.
WE CAN'T WAIT!! Great website, guys.

@ Elizabeth: For young children, I would recommend this beach. It has a park and a perfect swimming area for them. They'll absolutely love it!
@ Ishman: Of course, ocean conditions permitting, there can be many great places to swim in Poipu during May. This is the beginning of the surf season, though, so check for that days ocean conditions. If you're looking for a dip in the ocean, this beach is really nice. I'm assuming you mean a long swim. If this is the case, I would try Prince Kuhio's (a.k.a. PK's). The inside of PK's is protected by a reef so even if there are small waves it can still be good for swimming. If it's really flat (no waves), Shipwrecks and Maha'ulepu are the best, though.
There are many great hikes on the island. We are currently building a hiking guide. It will launch by Summer.
@ Ray: There is good snorkeling at Kiahuna when there are no waves. However, you are visiting in April, so there could be waves on the South Shore during this time. This is not to say that some days won't be flat and perfect for snorkeling. For your length of stay on the South Shore, you should be able to both snorkel and bodyboard.

May 14, 2007 6:25AM
Poipu is our favorite vacation destination, but we have always been there in the summer. Our next trip is planned for next February. Can you give me an idea of what kind of weather we can expect? Thank you!
May 16, 2007 9:43AM
Aloha! This summer I will be going to Kauai for a second time and I am in love with this beach! It is fantastic and I would totally recommend it! I was wondering how high is the shark attack rate on Kauai?
Jun 14, 2007 5:51AM
My husband and I are visiting Hawaii for the second time, but this is our first time to Kauai this July. With little knowledge we booked a room at the Sheraton on the South Shore. We both enjoy the beach and the mountains and I am now wondering if we should have booked something on the North Shore? We are looking to enjoy the outdoor experience of Kauai. I was wondering if you could tell me the major differences?
Gratefully yours,
Jo
Jun 14, 2007 8:08AM
Jo - each shore has different qualities and merits. South is generally sunnier and there is some great exploring there. You should definitely go check out Mahaulepu and do some hiking in Kokee as well (check out our new hiking section). That said, the North Shore beauty is unmatched - but less hotels and higher prices.

My husband and I are vacationing in Kauai mid to late November. Any tips?
Jun 21, 2007 8:11PM
Inline with the above question, five of us are vacationing in Kauai the last week of November. We can't seem to decide where to stay. It seems the remainder of my paragraph didn't post, the rest was ...but it seems more logical to stay on the east side so we are more in the middle of everything. We all love the water, and would want to be out doing as many water activities as possible. Does anyone have any pros/cons about the west side versus the east side? We would be grateful for any advice or suggetions!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 23, 2007 9:00AM
Amanda - Waimea is great for sunsets over the island of Niihau and I highly recommend the Waimea Plantation Cottages if you want to experience true Hawaiian style relaxation (I live in Hanalei and we go there for on-island getaways). In November North and West shore surf will be active and South shores will be generally calm. Please see our guides section for seasonal surf trends and more helpful info. WW

I am visiting Kauai for the first time in December, with a large group (9 of which are children) I've been debating between the Outrigger on Poipu and the Outrigger Waipouli Beach up on the East Shore. which would you recommend?

preferences or suggestions?
Jun 29, 2007 5:01AM
Is Brennecke's Beach near Po'ipu Beach Park? We are staying in a place across the street from Brennecke's Beach and wondered if we could walk to Po'ipu Beach Park from Brennecke's Beach or will we need to drive? We will be there in July. Is there much shopping near that area - the others like to do the hiking, exploring route while I prefer the beaches, shopping, relaxing, nightlife and sightseeing. Am I going to be able to enjoy my preferred hobbies? Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 29, 2007 7:17AM
Brenneke's is at the East end of Poipu Beach park. The beach used to have more sand before hurricane Iwa (pre Iniki) took most of it away. Poipu has some shopping and there is a great hike to Mahaulepu. Please check out the hiking section of our website.
Jul 13, 2007 4:05PM
I\'ve read that Poipu has high surf in the summer but today it said 1 to 3 feet. Is it swim??. I will be visiting poipu this month around the 20th. I hope the surf stays the same. What do you think?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 13, 2007 4:58PM
The general trend is for South shore surf to be active from May-Sept. and North / West shores to be active Sept. - May. There is some overlap and there are also out-of-season swells. Just because it is surf season on the South shore in summer does NOT mean that the surf will be up ALL of the time. Just keep checking our Ocean Report.
Jul 15, 2007 3:18PM
I will be on Kauai the last week of Jan and 1st week of February 2008, and we are staying on the East shore in Kapaa. Based upon what I have read, the most calm area for safer snorkeling will be the South beaches. What is the water temp like? I have a shorty wet suit and want to know if it is worth bringing. It is black with a purple stripe down each side. I know this may sound silly, but does wearing a wet suit make you look like possible "prey" to the sea life? Also, are gloves necessary while snorkeling?
Jul 15, 2007 4:20PM
Is the beach crowded if so when is the best time to go when the beach isn't as crowded?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 16, 2007 10:03AM
Melanie - the water will be warm and perhaps you'll get some West winds to make the East side offshore and nice. Personally I have worn all colors in the water without incident. A lot of people like to wear gloves - just please don't pick at the reef.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 16, 2007 10:04AM
Poipu is very popular - as with any location early morning will be less-crowded.

Im planning my first family vacation to Hawaii and hear that Kuai is the place to be. Im looking for an ocean front property and have heard many good things about Po'ipu Beach Park. Originally i was looking into Kapaa- and now am not sure. Can you tell me how they differ? Which is recommended for a family looking to vacation ocean front in early Oct.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 26, 2007 7:48AM
East-facing shores will generally have onshore winds (Easterly trade winds blow about 80% of the time). Onshore = choppy. Offshore / sideshore creates that nice texture that you see in picture books. The nice thing about this small island is that if one area is rough you usually can drive to the other side and find nice conditions.

We will vacationing in the Poipu area starting October 13, 2007 and want to snorkel several times. Oct. is right at the end of summer and the beginning of winter so I'm not sure where the best place is to snorkel North or South. What is the temperature around that time of year?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 27, 2007 7:43AM
October is a transition time and you just have to stay in tune with the conditions. North or South can be rough or epic during that time.
Aug 03, 2007 7:26PM
We will be spending our honeymoon from March 31 to April 7, 2008 near Poipu beach. This will be our first time to snorkel, is this generally a good time to snorkel? Do you recommend wet suits? Thanks!
Aug 06, 2007 3:45AM
Aloha!
I have noticed that no one has mentioned the incredible Hawaiian Monk Seals that frequent Poipu Beach. I fly in from Ohio to volunteer with the 'Hawaiian Monk Seal Conservation Hui' and spend a good deal of my time on Poipu putting up protection zones and educating visitors about these critically endangerd species. They only number about 1200 and come ashore to sleep and digest, so please, PLEASE do not approach or disturb them. They are large marine mammals that just want a quiet place to relax, and as wild animals, they will bite if they feel threatened.... Keep yourselves and the seals safe. Mahalo for your consideration!!
Aug 07, 2007 2:46PM
We just came back from our first vacation in Hawaii and we spent the first week of July in Kaua'i. There are so many favorite places I can't begin to name them all. I would advise checking out all the shores and as many beaches as you can as they are all very unique. I wish we had more time to see them all. We can't wait to go back!
Aug 12, 2007 5:25PM
I'm coming to the Poipu area next week and want to know if there are any good longboarding breaks? Thanks.
Aug 31, 2007 7:39PM
My husband and I are planning to visit Kauai at the end of November. We plan on doing a lot of snorkeling during our vacation but have heard that snorkeling during the winter is generally not a good idea because of the trade winds, surf conditions, and colder water temperature. Is this true of the southern part of the island like Poipu as well?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 01, 2007 6:56AM
Snorkeling is excellent in winter on Kauai - you just have to know where to go. South shores will generally be calmer but occasionally E and N will calm down during November. Trades are generally stronger in summer, so the lighter winds may work in your favor. Water temperatures are essentially the same.
Sep 03, 2007 2:04PM
I think one poster name Julie mentioned the monk seals, they often come ashore and have their babies at Poipu. You're lucky if you happen to be there when this happens. If they close the beach to protect the mother and baby, don't fret there are plenty of beaches. (I've seen people raise a fuss because of this)
Sep 15, 2007 6:11AM
We went to Piopu in April and it was great. We are now planning to return in July and I wanted to check where will be the best place for kids, so the waves are not too big?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 15, 2007 7:14AM
Summer surf is generally larger on the South shore and calmer North. Please see our seasonal surf trends guide.
Sep 18, 2007 8:02PM
Me & my wife will be vacationing on Kapaa Shores Resort in Kapaa in the months of March-April. Their website shows sandy beach behind the resort. Is this true? Is it good snorkeling and/or swimming place? We are middle-aged couples, is this a safe place in general? How's the traffic situation in the island during these months. What is the normal weather situation in the island during these months? We are first timers, what important tip can you give us to have an enjoyable stay in your island paradise? Thanks in advance as we look forward to being there.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 19, 2007 8:00AM
Kapaa is generally onshore because Easterly "trade" winds blow about 60-70% of the time. This means choppy seas for East-facing shores. Occasionally the wind blows offshore or is calm and the conditions can be beautiful. There are many rip currents along the shoreline so please consult lifeguards and the hotel staff for safe swimming info.
The traffic in Kapaa is always bad.
An important tip? Resist the urge to "see it all." Find a few spots that you like and relax. This beach guide should help. Aloha!
Sep 25, 2007 5:45AM
My family will be vacationing in the Poipu area in February. While we enjoy snorkeling, it is the boogieboarding beaches that we really want to find. Any suggestions?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 26, 2007 10:52AM
Alison - February will be great snorkeling but do not expect much surf on the South shore during the winter months. You can always drive to other shores and find surf - make sure to assess hazards, know your ability and consult lifeguards or locals.
Oct 04, 2007 12:33PM

Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 08, 2007 9:59AM
My local knowledge understands that the "official" Baby Beach is on the East shore in Kapaa. It is also known as Fuji beach and is close to the Waipouli beach park. There are other beaches to safely swim with little ones - which one depends on the current wind and sea conditions for your beach day.

Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 21, 2007 7:49AM
Hi Kath - this website is full of recommendations BUT if I were to choose one adventure it would be a hike to Hanakapiai Falls. Muddy, tough and beautiful - and you could swim under a Hawaiian waterfall.
If you want to relax then go check out Hanalei Bay or go snorkeling in Poipu.
Nov 25, 2007 7:45AM
Kath,
My husband and I will also be on a cruise that will be going around the islands. Ours is leaving Honolulu on Dec. 10th. Your question is the same one I was intending to ask. It would be fun to connect with someone beforehand. Are you planning on doing the hike?
Nov 25, 2007 1:29PM
This site has invaluable comments from your staff! I will be getting married on the island the week of March 9 -14 2008. I would like to learn how to snorkle and do some swimming but I am nervous after reading about all the riptides! I almost drowned in the Bahamas while swimming and got caught in a riptide or strong current. It was terrifying! Can you please advise on where it is safest for beginning swimmers and snorkling at that time of year? Also which trails are under an hour each direction for a hike? Is there anywhere that supplies picnic lunches? we would also like to kayak somewhere safe too! Can't wait to see your island this March!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 26, 2007 10:02AM
Roshee - the safest swimming will be at one of the lifeguarded beaches. Check the daily Ocean Report, then go to a lifeguarded location based on that report. Lots of hikes are under an hour (check the guides). Lots of good places to get picnic lunches and local delicacies. For Kayaking I recommend Kayak Hanalei. W

Randy - there are a number of good snorkeling areas on the South shore. Try the area near the Sheraton Kauai and down by Prince Kuhio. The one caution is that you must make sure there are no swells / advisories on your snorkeling day. Ask the lifeguards or locals.

Are there lockers?
Jan 24, 2008 8:14PM
This is such a great site -- just what I was looking for. My family (2 adults and a 10-year-old) will be on Kauai in late June and early July this year. I have been leaning toward staying in Poipu, mainly because I would like to swim with my son in the ocean and be able to do that easily from wherever we stay w/o driving. I am wondering if high surf in Poipu during that time is likely to prevent us from swimming safely. I don't mind driving in order to snorkel, but I would like to be staying at whatever beach we are using on a daily basis for swimming. I guess my question boils down to: Do you think we will be able to swim safely at Poipu during the summer months, or should I be looking only at the North shore? Thanks so much.

Jan 25, 2008 7:20AM
Aloha Sarah. Glad you found the site and are enjoying it. It is true that the North shore generally has smaller surf in the summer. If you're looking for a place to stay near a beach that would be likely to have more consistent swimming conditions, you may want to consider the Anini Beach area on the North Shore, as it is protected by a reef. Snorkeling can be found at beaches within short driving distances from this beach park. J

Visited in Mid-January. I had done much beach research (including this site), and thought Po'ipu would just be OK. Well, this beach offered incredible snorkeling and swimming. Yes, the rocky entry required reef shoes and some balance, but easily worth it. Also, didn't find it too crowded. So, in my book, it went from "OK" to my favorite on the island.

Nicole - it rarely rains ALL day here. The showers usually are passing and the temps are moderate. One nice thing about a little rain squall is that it clears out the beach, leaving it just for those who hang out. The beach near Princeville Hotel is small but nice and the walk to Hanalei is great from there (as long as the river is not flooded). Ask the hotel staff or check the website for current conditions. Planning to travel to the Island tomorrow. Can't wait! I am certified in scuba and would also like to snorkel while I'm on the island. I found your website incredibly informative and plan to access it while I'm there to plan my days. One question, when your ocean report lists the visibility (good, fair, poor), is that the visibility underwater? Visibility is always important for good diving and snorkeling and I was concerned that we may be having an issue with all the run off from the rains on the island this last week. Any advice will be appreciated.
Eric.

Hi Eric - the listed visibility on our Ocean Report is for WATER visibility / clarity. Many beaches are seeing brown water right now because it rained hard last weekend (2-4). Usually takes a few days to clear. W

Hi Jeff - mid-summer your best bet for surf will be all along the South facing shores. Your board selection seems appropriate. Summer Easterly trade winds blow most of the time and will be offshore at many South shore breaks. Summer surf is not as large as Winter, but plenty powerful. Uncrowded? I don't think so. W

Any input on windsurfing beach locations, rental shops, etc for trip in mid March?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 17, 2008 6:52PM
Steve - people windsurf at Mahaulepu on the South Shore, Anini and Haena. The wind is not as strong or consistent as on Maui but March is a good month. W
Feb 23, 2008 9:37PM
wow- this site is great-its very addictive :)
I am planning a trip to kauai june 1-8 with a one year old, Im looking for accomodations ideally in an oceanfront condo on a beach that is calm, shallow and baby freindly, but also has access to great snorkeling (my husband and I are avid snorkelers). What beach on which side of the island offers that, also, any thoughts on where to stay thats on the beach and walking distance close to restaurants, stores etc? Im comparing staying at Kaanapali, Maui to Kauai-I\'d like to stay on the island that has the best crystal clear & calm beach with great snorkeling too! Also, is there a beach that offers the above thats mosquito-free (am I just expecting too much here?)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Feb 24, 2008 9:07PM
Hi Michelle - glad you are enjoying the Explorer addiction :). In Summer it is hard to beat the N. shore of Kauai for raw beauty and (mostly) calm ocean fun. Kaanapali has a lot more development. On Kauai you will NOT find condos on the beach - but Princeville is a short drive from some great locations. There are vacation homes in Hanalei and Haena - expect to pay $$$ and expect to be rewarded by the more exclusive, less crowded setup. Take your kid to Kee first thing in the AM and you will be stoked. Mosquitoes are around, but not down by the water.
As always, be careful around the ocean and ask locals for advice. W

What a great site! My husband and I will be staying near Poipu March 17th-24th. I am a huge snorkeling enthusiast and welcome any insights to the best places to visit with the most diverse aquatic life. Unfortunately we are on a tight budget; can you suggest any good spots/activities for frugal travelers? I also saw a comment that mentioned a zip line that caught my interest... could you tell me a little more about it or where to go?
Thanks, J.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 05, 2008 8:17PM
Aloha Jaemie. Fortunately, Kauai is so filled with natural beauty, those on a budget can enjoy many outdoor activities for free. You'll see the hikes and beaches listed on this site. Generally, surf is smaller on the South and West sides this time of year. Poipu beach park is a recommended snorkel/swim spot. Should the waves be small on the North shore, you can also check out Haena Beach park.
As for a Zipline activity, we don't recommend specific companies, but an online search for "kauai zipline tour" will pull up a couple of island companies' websites.
Hope this helps. Aloha. J

Coming to Poipu middle April 2008. What can I expect average surf conditions to be in spring time.
Mar 10, 2008 7:39PM
My daughter is getting married near Poipu this August. Where is the best place to look for affordable vacation rentals tht will be reasonably close to the wedding location? Thanks, I find your site very useful.

Aloha Veronica. We do not recommend any particular vacation rentals but we do encourage our site users to support our sponsors. The Parrish Collection Kauai sponsors the Mahaulepu beach and trail pages on this website and information about the company can be found there. You can also contact the Poipu Beach Resort Association at poipubeach.org for information about the Poipu area and what is offered there. J

Aloha Jim. Surf conditions are difficult to predict. Generally speaking, the North & West shores sees swells Sept - May, with the South swells coming in May - Sept. If you're in Poipu in April you may be traveling West or to the North shore to get the best surf. Have fun! J
Mar 11, 2008 2:23PM
Is the surf break offshore in the center of the bay in front of the Shearton at Po\'ipu called Waiohai or First Break?
Thanks

Mar 14, 2008 1:56AM
Aloha Kevin. Kauai is well known for keeping its surfbreaks as quiet as possible. As a surfer, I'm sure you can appreciate that and will enjoy your own explorations. J
Mar 16, 2008 7:51PM
My family will be traveling to Kauai the first week of June 2008. We will have young kids, 7 years to 3 years. What are your suggestions for activities and places to visit. I would like to do some hikes, but not sure what would be appropriate for the kids. Also, looking forward to any educational events, activities to take the kids to introduce them to the native culture, enviornments and nature of Kauai.

Aloha Carla. Lydgate Park and the adjoining Path are a great place to take children to enjoy beach, picnic and playgrounds. Check out our site's Ecovents page to see what ecology events are taking place during your stay. It highlights guided hikes and beach clean ups. Check out our site's Native Species page for info about the tropical botanical gardens and their tours, too. This link http://www.kauaifestivals.com/ will show you other events taking place on the island.
Enjoy! J

My husband & I plan to celebrate our 35th anniversary in mid May,09 in Kauai. We love the beach, snorkeling and maybe some diving. We also would like to see the canyons and waterfalls, etc. Where would be the best side of the island for us? Can't wait to get there!
Mar 18, 2008 10:40PM
I'm headed to Kauai this Sunday for two weeks....have visited at this same time of year for the last few years. I surf a bit an am looking for the best options. Brennekes is a bit challenging for me still but the Sheraton break isn't tough enough. Any suggestions?
Also. Want to hike the first couple of miles of the Napali Coast with my 9 and 6-year old boys....they are relatively athletic.....are they still too young to handle the first part of the trail?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 19, 2008 7:38AM
Hi Mary. As a surfer you'll probably understand why we won't be naming too many specific breaks. The fun is discovering them for yourself. Depending on conditions, you may also want to check out Hanalei Bay. As for hiking, only you know your children's level of ability. It's uphill on rocks the whole first section, but if you're not attached to getting to Hanakapiai, you could hike a shorter distance and get to a lookout point. J

Mar 19, 2008 7:45AM
Aloha Sharon. The South side (Poipu) may be a good spot as a homebase, being that Waimea canyon is on the West, snorkeling at Poipu Beach Park on the South side and waterfalls can be viewed in Wailua on the East side. Contact a local dive shop for more info about where they go. Enjoy! J
Mar 25, 2008 4:19AM
Our family just returned from Kaui on 3/22. We visited several beaches on the South Shore, but ended up returning most days to Po'ipu. Po'ipu allowed us to swim and snorkle in relatively calm waters during a fairly high surf week. And, we could walk "next door" to Brenneke beach for some excellent body boarding. Plenty of public parking, restrooms, and a deli across the street made a full day at the beach easy and enjoyable for everyone.
Apr 07, 2008 4:17AM
Very impressed with the website and greatly appreciate the information. I am planning to come to Hawaii in July for my honeymoon. My fiance and I have never surfed and are not boogie-boarders in the official sense of the word - but we do like to play in the waves and really want a beach with waves. It sounds like Po'ipu is one of our best bets that time of year. Are there other beaches on Kauai or on other islands that you can recommend for relatively easy access and reasonable chance of waves? I realize you don't do lodging recs but our plan is to find a beach that fits these criteria and has a hotel so that we don't even have to travel to get to the waves! Thanks very much.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 07, 2008 8:35PM
Aloha Rachel. Keep in mind that the South shore gets high surf in the summer months. Poipu Beach is lifeguarded, so check in with a lifeguard before going out. There are plenty of accommodations near this beach. Checking in with the Poipu Beach Resort association at poipubeach.org could help you find the best spot. Enjoy. J

Where is the best place to camp in June on the south shore of Kauai?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2008 6:53PM
Hi Frank. You may want to check out Salt Pond, just outside of Hanapepe town. It's one of the only campspots on the south side and offers facilities at a beach park off the beaten path but not too far from quaint Hanapepe town. We highlight this beach in our Beaches section. You'll need a permit, of course. Otherwise, head further west and you can camp at Polihale for a very remote experience. Enjoy. J
Apr 18, 2008 6:24PM
@ Kauai Explorer Staff: "Yes, we would not recommend surfing at Poipu Beach Park. Try Hanalei Bay during the summer, you'll be stoked!"
Are you sure about that? Maybe if you've never surfed before ;)
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 18, 2008 10:36PM
Hi "E" - Poipu Beach Park is not a good spot for beginners. Hanalei is easy because of sand bottom and, yes, beginning surfers can find friendly waves to ride there even in summer. The advice in this forum admittedly leans towards safety. W

What can I expect the beach and water conditions to be in Po'ipu at the end of August? We have a 5-year old. Will the baby beach be calm?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 25, 2008 4:06PM
You can't predict ocean conditions exactly, but generally the South shore sees a swell in the summertime. The ocean report on this site and the lifeguards at Poipu Beach Park can give you the most accurate info once you're here. If you're looking for more flat conditions in August, you may want to check out Lydgate, Anini or Hanalei Bay. Enjoy your stay. J

I\'m planning to visit Kauai this August with my wife and daughter (2 yrs old). I am a novice to intermediate surfer and would love to stay somewhere I can surf every day. I don\'t need huge waves, but big enough to surf on a shorter board. On the other hand, my wife would like a nice beach and some amenities nearby (e.g., restaurants, maybe a spa). We both also enjoy natural beauty and hiking, but obviously can\'t get too extreme with a 2 year old. Sooo..... What\'s the best beach for us?
May 12, 2008 8:10AM
Planning on going here in January 2009 for honeymoon. What is the temperature like at this time, Air and Water. Also any cliffs or water falls you can jump from that are safe 20 to 30 ft high?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 12, 2008 9:11PM
You may be on the right path with Poipu Beach, but surf can be big here in the summer. Hard to predict. Stay tuned with this site's ocean report and ask the lifeguard on duty. Hanalei is another location that could serve all, but in August, it is likely that this bay will have more lake-like conditions. You may have to check out a few beaches to get it all. Enjoy. J

Aloha Jarrett. Water temperatures vary throughout the year by between 71 and 81 degrees, the coldest being during winter. The air temp remains in the 70s during the days and can dip into the high 60s in winter (usually at night). It is not recommended to jump off of any cliffs or waterfalls, as this has taken lives. Do an online search for guided tours to Kipu Falls and you can go with a company that will give you a safe experience with some jungle falls. Enjoy! J

Aloha. For most of the teens on Kauai, time is spent at the beach. Making sure your teens are aware of important safety precautions in the ocean and while hiking, is very important. As for other fun activities, the Sheraton hosts an outdoor movie night in that area. You may want to check with the Poipu Beach Resort Association, as well, for more info/ideas: http://www.poipu-beach.org/

Aloha! My family and I just returned home to Alaska after visiting Kaua'i. how wonderful. And this beach...Poipu, the best for ones with little ones in tow. My 23 month old enjoyed the the protected area as did his father and I. My best friend was also there with her two girls and they had fun there also. The rest of us enjoyed the sun. We came to Poipu beach park 3 times during our stay on the island. Mahalo and Aloha!

We are planning a family trip (which includes our 4 college age guys and gals) for the 5th of May of 2009. We can't decide if we should stay on the North or South side of the island. We would like to be on a swimmable beach. Also, we are from Florida and we are decent snorkelers. Which side is most known for calmer waters in May? In addition to that do you have any suggestions for a snorkeling trip? Should we reserve a snorkel trip on a boat? Or are there really good snorkeling spots from shore? So often when we travel (in the Caribbean for example) we get involved in snorkeling that is really meant for beginners and there isn't much to see. We have grown accustomed to the amount of coral and marine life that we see in the Florida Keys. Do you know how the snorkeling compares?
Thank you for your help. This website is very informative!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 23, 2008 7:23AM
Aloha Michelle, check out our seasonal surf trends page to see the graph on ocean conditions year round. May is the ending of big surf on the North shore and the beginning of larger conditions on the South shore. Still keep abreast of the ocean report and speak with lifeguards when you're here. Makua is a well known North shore beach for snorkeling (also highlighted on this site). If you enjoy tours, a snorkel trip down the Na Pali would be a good bet too, as the coastline is breathtaking and the area pristine. J

Please recommend other nearby beaches for first-time scuba diving save from sharks also. I will be staying at Kiahuna Plantation South Shore. Thank you.

HI Robert. The summer sees bigger waves and more dangerous ocean conditions on the South side. Lifeguards at Poipu Beach Park can let you know specifics for the days you are visiting. Conditions change throughout the day and cannot be predicted precisely. You can also check out Ocean Report and ask the front desk where you stay. J

Aloha Luke. The island generally sees small to medium surf around the island in Sept. Check out our Seasonal Surf Trends page: https://kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
Kalapaki may have some waves happening again. Check our ocean report while you're here. J

Aloha,
Kauai Explorer is one of the neatest sites I have found. Great links to NOAH, etc.
I am interested in finding out if there is a correlation between tides and wave height. For example, do most big/high waves occur during high tides? Is it generally calmer during low tides?
From looking at NOAH websites, etc. I can see that predicting ocean conditions is a really complex science, and definately not an exact science.
Thank you for your thoughts on this! Keep up the great work!
Maureen
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 04, 2008 7:44PM
Aloha Maureen. Thanks for the feedback. There is some correlation between tides and wave heights, but swells are generated by wind from storms usually far away from the islands. The tides influence how these swells play out locally, but do not change the actual height of the swell. The area of coastline is really the depending factor in how much influence a tide will have on wave. For example, a surf break on a reef might hardly break at all during a high tide, but there will be powerful waves there at low tide during the same swell. Another thing the tide influences is how far the waves surge up the beach, but not necessarily changing the surf heights. More water means that waves will wash up higher on the beach and might 'seem' bigger. J

Hi Jay. It's hard to predict exact conditions, but you may want to look at our sit'es Seasonal Surf Trends page:

October is typically seeing smaller surf on the South side and it continues to decline into winter. Enjoy! J

Aloha! My husband and I are planning a trip to Kauai the first week of September. He is an experienced surfer and I want to make sure he has a good time. What would be a good area to stay in that would give us access to the best surfing beaches for that time of year? I should also add that we aren't into huge resorts and mass tourism.
Thanks so much!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 11, 2008 8:18PM
Aloha Brenda. September is the time of year when surf is usually between small and medium sized, island-wide. Take a look at our Seasonal Surf Trends page:
https://kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
Poipu tends to have a bit more of a resort-like kind of feeling. Areas north of Hanalei are much more remote. Kapaa could be a central location area to travel from, depending on where surf conditions are best. The town is busy, though areas in the hills above it, like Wailua and Kapahi, are more 'country'. These spots generally have their share of vacation rentals. Enjoy! J

My friend and I are coming by cruise ship in January. How long a taxi drive is it to Poipu beach? Are there public showers & bathrooms at Kalapaki beach? Mostly we just want to hang out in the sun on some pretty beach within taxi distance from the port. What would you recommend??

Our son is getting married on Fen 2010. They were thinking about getting married in Hawaii, we have all been to Ohau before but not Kauai. we are planning a trip to kauai in the first half of december and wonder what the best beaches for body surfing would be at that time. we were thinking of staying in the south shore but from reading some of the info on this site it seems their may not be reliable waves as south shore surf is down during the winter. any suggestions? thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 28, 2008 5:09PM
Hi Kevin - South shores will be flat in December (barring some unusual swell). North shores are where the winter surf is at, and East shores usually have some small waves. Just be warned that Hawaiian surf is much more powerful than those on the mainland. These are waves coming from the open ocean. W

Thanks for yoru advice.

Aloha,
I took surfing lessons 6 year ago on Kauai with a local pro but can not remember which beach we were at. I want to rent a place that is close to a beach with beginner waves with sand an not corral, and hopefully a lifeguard to fish me out of the water if I get overly ambitious trying to catch a wave out of my league. My girlfriend wants to be near nice places to go while I take lessons like a spa or shopping. In our dream world we would have all of this and not overly crowded. Is it true that the beaches there are generally not packed with people in early December? Many thanks!

Aloha,
what a great site! Perhaps you could help me with my question. My family and I are planning to visit Kauai probably in early June 2009, for a week to 10 days. We have 2 kids 3 and 5 years old. I would like to do some snorkeling, we\'d need a safe swimming beach, and we are planning to visit the Waimea Canyon. Where would you recommend us to stay? I realize that the South has its high surf in summer. How probable is it that Poipu beach would still be good enough for us?
Mahalo!

Hi Dmitry - it's hard to recommend South or North as the best place to stay. Both have beautiful beaches, hiking and exploring. South shore surf is GENERALLY bigger in summer but you still get plenty of days with small surf. W
Dec 17, 2008 4:36AM
Aloha,
will be in Kauai at the end of April. Found a great place to stay in Koloa. So, I guess South shore it is, for us. According to your graph the surf should still be pretty mellow that time of year, correct? We have a 1.5 year old, and I want to make sure we can have a few safe beach days with him. Does Poipu beach park get pretty busy? Do you think the Awa-'awapuhi Grand Loop hike is doable for an experience hiker with a toddler in a backpack? It sounds like there a few tricky spots. Thanks for this awesome, resoureful website!

Dec 17, 2008 10:50PM
Hi Karen - April is generally a month where there is not much surf on the South shore, although it can be windy during that time of year. Keep in mind that we are speaking about surf trends and patterns; there are always exceptions and I recommend you check this website for daily conditions.
Poipu Beach Park can get busy, but there is some nice exploring at Mahaulepu and Shipwrecks. If you are a strong hiker Awaawapuhi is doable with a kid on your back. It's gonna be tough and the little one will be in the pack for hours - but it is not unsafe. Have fun, be safe. W

Just wanted to post a comment here.. I visited Kauai in October 2006... Poipu Beach was one of my favorite stops. For those who are curious, Brennekes also happens to have some awesome food. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt facing Shipwrecks, and even to this day two years later I find myself on this site daily reading the Surf Forecast and wishing I was there..
Excellent job on the site guys.. If I had $50,000.00 to spend I would donate it all to get Explorer sites open for the rest of the islands.. Best Kauai guide available. Mahalo!

Hello,
My fiance and I are coming to Kauai for our honeymoon in late April. We're really excited because of all the positive things we have heard. We were curious about jellyfish around that time of year. Are jellyfish much of an issue on the island??? Thank you.

Jan 02, 2009 6:13PM
Hi Frank - box jellyfish and Portuguese Man O War are a rare nuisance on Kauai beaches. Usually the water is clean. We post reports if lifeguards encounter them. W
Jan 09, 2009 3:07AM
I'm thinking of visiting Kauai at the end of February but have heard that the water will be too choppy for snorkeling and kayaking. True or False? What is the best part of the island to stay on at that time? Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 09, 2009 5:19PM
Hi Bighair - where did you hear that the water will be too choppy? Conditions always change and you can generally go to the leeward side of the island (the area opposite the wind and surf on that day). Today the North shore is very calm and it's mid-winter. Next week the surf is forecast to be 20'. Bottom line, keep touch with changing conditions and go to the area best suited for your activity. In Feb the South shore will generally be calmest. W

We stayed in Poipu the first half of December when storms eroded several feet of sand from the local beaches. What happens naturally or by intervention to restore the beaches. We have been curious to know what that process is like.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 13, 2009 5:50PM
Hi Linda - good question. The truth is there is no way to stop natural erosion. Sand comes and goes with surf and seasons, but consider that 6-8 million years ago Kauai extended 1.5 to 2 miles further out to sea! W

Aloha! I'm not that familiar with snorkeling, but I want to try it. I noticed comments above that mentioned people should wear reef shoes. Do you wear those instead of fins when you snorkel in certain areas? Are fins still useful for other areas? Thanks!
Jan 24, 2009 6:36PM
We are going to Kauai in the middle of March. We are staying in Kekaha and would love to go snorkleing somewhere not too far away. My grandpa, (who is 70) likes to just be able to float and look at the coral and fish, so not too deep of water. Is this beach a good beach, is there any other beaches as well that would be good?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 25, 2009 5:50PM
Hi DJ - snorkeling is all about relaxing, breathing and floating. With fins you can power around and move faster, but I see lots of people totally happy taking their time looking at all the little things. Use fins when you want to go somewhere - like swim to a reef area offshore - or when you have to deal with current. Have fun. W

Hi Alex - Poipu and Salt Pond are both good choices for grandpa (as long as there is no surf). W

I regularly surf on 5 different sized boards in the san diego area. tamarack carlsbad south to la jolla shores, i am used to these areas and am an experienced surfer for these breaks. 2 to 4 foot is perfect but can do 3 to5 with occasional 7 foot. where can i surf in kauai? and rent the correct board? i will also have people with me who would want to get in the water but not surf, maybe snorkel. What beach should I plan on using during march 26 thru 31. also will need to rent snorkeling gear for them and maybe kayak?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 24, 2009 6:34AM
Hi Mary - as our Surf Trends page describes, North and West shores statistically has the most surf in March. If the surf is not too big you and your friends can swim and snorkel at Ke?e or Makua. It is impossible for me to predict the conditions 30 days out so you can't really plan which beach to use. Be sure to check our daily Ocean Report.
Rent various boards, kayaks and other gear in Hanalei. You certainly are the most precise surfer ever to submit a comment here - I use 1 or 2 boards over a much larger size range.
Glad you like the site so much! You are welcome.

Had a great weeks stay in Kauai over Christmas and went to most of the best beaches or most talked about beaches and just wanted to say that I felt Poipu Beach is extremely overrated. If you like a crowded small beach without any interesting background, then go, but to me, the North shore wins hands down! Especially, the Tunnels and Ke'e beach areas for their seclusion and beauty with the mountainous backdrop. Hanelei Bay was superb as well and was great fun boogie boarding. There are rentals nearby. Haena State Park was my favorite. Where else can you have the place all to yourself and see turtles and seals resting on the sand!
Mar 02, 2009 2:15AM
We arrive in Hanalei in 2.5 weeks, and reading through this again did nothing to help calm my excitement! Thanks to Roger for the blog ... It's our first visit to the islands and this site has been FANTASTIC in helping us get acquainted with what Kauai has to offer!

Amazing site, I'm attending a wedding for my brother in law in Kauai in July on the south shore. My friends and I will be there for a full week and we've never been before. Can you recommend a few things.
1. good outdoor wedding spot on the south beach.
2. things we can't miss if we only go to Kauai once!

hi there - we will be staying at Poipu the week of March 16th (3 kids - 15 - 9 yrs old), and we were hoping to hike, surf, swim, and snorkle and look for sea turtles. Tunnels sounds great for snorkling; if you have any specific recommendations for surfing in march waters (beginner to intermediate levels), other snorkling locations (seen mixed reviews for Poipu...is it good in March? - tunnels sounds great - not sure for march??) and where kids could maybe see some sea turtles, that would be great (is it a nesting time?. great site - lots of info.... thanks in advance

Mar 08, 2009 3:30AM
Hi C & C - doubtful you'll find much surf on the South shore in March but no surf equals great snorkeling. Turtles are all around Kauai but it is very rare to see them onshore. If our Ocean Report shows a small NW swell head up to Hanalei and check out the sanbars, or reefs at the point. W

Mar 08, 2009 3:38AM
Hi BMB - there are a number of wedding spots on Kauai but I highly recommend working with a local coordinator that can help with the legal, local, access and weather factors. You should definitely hike Na Pali, surf Hanalei, go out on a boat and check out Kokee. W
Apr 16, 2009 4:44AM
We are headed to the south shore in July. We would like to do a lot of boogie boarding and learn how to surf. We don\'t have a specific place picked out to stay yet / primary beach - would this be the best spot on the south shore for those activities? Are there others?
Also, are any of these spots known to have overcrowding / problems with the local crew? We will show the utmost respect for the locals, try to absorb island culture, and hopefully make friends as well - but we are still tourists and some of the press / media (typically about famous spots like pipeline) talking about local crews all over Hawaii defending their turf makes us a little worried about finding spots and getting in the water.
I\'ll be the next person who says this is a great site - and I\'ll add by saying it\'s great because we can ask questions and have them answered by a staff member we know has local experience - unlike an open forum in which there\'s often doubt about the responder. Mahalo

Hi,
we will come to Kauai this august with our 10 month old daugther and of course we are looking for calm and accessible beaches. I still cannot decide whether find an accommodation on north or south side. Can you give some suggestion? Are weather conditions better in south than north during august?
Thank's

Apr 16, 2009 7:23PM
Mahalo for the props Brian. A few South shore surf / boogie spots include Mahaulepu, Shipwrecks, Waohai, Centers, PK's, Acid Drop, Pakala's. All of the locations on the South shore have reef - some with sand mixed in (like Shipwrecks). If you are a real beginner try Kalapaki but it's not the nicest scenery. As far as localism goes, it definitely exists. It's not necessarily "Mokes Vs Haoles" - localism comes in all colors. Primarily it's a function of more people than waves. That said, I would not be intimidated out of surfing here. Check the scene, respect, don't go out in a break beyond your ability and just get in the way. Also be careful parking at abandoned places where thieves might lurk. Hope this helps. W

Hi,
following your suggestion about calm waters and accessible beaches in August, we are planning to go on the north shore. Do you think that a spot like Hanalei Colony Resort is a good base to reach the beautiful beaches or there are better solutions closer to Princeville? Is the beach in front of the resort swimmable?
Thank's
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 23, 2009 1:06AM
Hi Daniele - the Hanalei Colony Resort is in a great location (Haena) but the beach directly in front is generally unsafe for swimming. The resort itself is pretty basic, it's all about location. Princeville has more options or you might try a vacation rental home. Either way, North Shore is great in August. W

My wife and I are planning a trip to Kauai in October. We rented a small house in Poipu for a week for our 35th anniversary. We want to try and swim with the dolphins, but there does not seem to be a place that specifically offers this. Any suggestions? In addition, we like to tandem kayak, but it seems all the kayak tours include some hiking. Is there a river kayak tour that does not require any hiking?

Heading to Kauai tomorrow and the 7 day forecast is all rain! 20% chance each day. Everyone keeps saying "rain is different" in Kauai (meaning I guess there aren't as many steady, all-day storms?). Hi John - on Kauai there are no "dolphin quest" companies that offer swimming with dolphins in captivity. In the wild, spinner dolphins generally won't let you get close. Also, we recommend leaving these wild creatures alone. For kayaking, you can go to Hanalei River and Bay or Waliua without any hiking. W

Where would be good stay to be close to some surf for me but some shelter to get out with a snorkel. I am experienced surfer but more used to beach breaks or not to heavy reefs. Waves with head high faces would do, a bit more is better but I\'m not looking for really heavy stuff.

I almost collided with a 6 feet tiger shark 15 feet from the Poipu beach shoreline last week. If the people weren't yelling at me, I would have stayed in the water. The shark in the last second avoided the collision by turning right, giving me time to return on the beach. The shark then went very close to the shore, about 5 feet. Be very very careful at Poipu and other Kauai beaches!

I've been a resident of Kauai for about six months now, and since i got here i've been surfing poipu beach as much as possible. Personally I think the beach itself kind of sucks compared to some other areas, but overall its absolutely beautiful. The surf is exceptional depending on the weather as well. I always make a note to check Kauaiexplorer before I go out. I love how i can just click on the "Poipu Beach" icon and instantly get the surf report. The only time the report has been wrong the waves have been 1-2 feet larger than what was predicted, which was a pleasant surprise haha. Thanks!

I'm interested in more info about moderate surfing in January.
I'm hoping to spend a week in mid-January just relaxing and surfing; my surf level is intermediate at best. Looks like Hanalei Bay is a great location, but I worry that the swell will be too big in January ... and reading this page, I worry that Poipu will be too small. Thoughts? Is it possible to find moderate waves in Kauai during January with some degree of consistency?

Hi Karen - generally you are going to have to go South in February, even though it could get calm. Check our Ocean Report. Please please please support our sponsors by going on one of their catamaran trips. Capt. Andy's and HoloHolo are both solid operations.

Hello!
We are planning to come to Kauai in the end of the May. What part of the island is the best for the family vacation (swimming and sunbathing)? We have small children.
Jan 22, 2011 9:04PM
We\'re currently booked into the Sheraton at Poipu for May 27-30 and just found out their main pool and restaurant will be under construction. We booked the Sheraton due to its location on Poipu Beach, hoping for some calm water for swimming. We\'ve now got to decide if we want to book elsewhere, like the Hyatt or Marriott, but after reading a number of posts at this site, should we consider the North Shore instead? What will swimming be like at the Sheraton, Hyatt, or Marriott,or the North shore in late May.

Paul - we have a page on seasonal ocean conditions on this website.

Are there any good apps for my smart phone for exploring Kauai and daily surf conditions? If not I love your website and will check in with that! Thank you
Feb 08, 2011 5:15PM
Erica, I would not describe surfing at Waiohai as \'horrible\'. Like anywhere it depends the time of year and the day.

Love your site!! We will be in Kauai from March 9th to 15th with 3 boys ages 4, 9, and 11 who are strong swimmers. What are the things we should not miss?

Hi Annette - this website is full of things to do. We've selected a variety of the best things to do from a local's perspective.

Help! Cannot decide where to have Nov. wedding..we plan to rent several houses on the beach and were considering Aliomanu or Anini. Now I\'m worried about wind on the east shore. Don\'t like crowds but should we settle for south shore for better weather, calmer surf?

Hello. What a wonderful site! I have read all the comments and looked at your seasonal surf chart; however, I still have a question :) I am planning ot visit Kauai the last two weeks of July - does the higher surf on the South Side in summer make the \"baby lagoon\" at Poipu Beach Park unsafe or rough? I have a 2.5 year old who doesn\'t appreciate much wave in his water and am looking for a very placid and safe water experience for him. Thanks so much!!

We will be staying at the Sheraton in Poipu the first week in October. We love to snorkel, but my wife isn't the best swimmer in the world. Also, she saw a video on You Tube of sharks at Poipu Beach. So, what kind of sharks are these? Would love to swim with them, but don't want to be their lunch. Thanks for having such a wonderful website!

Love this informative website....
My partner and I are traveling to Kauai the week before and the weekend of Memorial Day. We are probably going to spend 5 days at Poipu, then 3 days north. We want to see and explore Ke'e and Na Pali...We want to avoid crowds and kids (no offense to anyone). Here's the question. Should we stay in Poipu the first 5 days or the last? How busy does it get on Memorial weekend?

Hello, we are planning our wedding in the Thanksgiving week in Grand Hyatt. We have families and friends coming from all different places and it would be difficult to find better timing for everyone than the last week of November. But after reading a lot about winters in Kauai, I am very worried about the rains during this season. Does it really get bad in late Nov? Is the rain in Poipu area like tropical showers or all-day rain under gray sky? How likely is it to have 2-3 days of rain in a row?
Thanks for your advice!

Aloha!
My friend and I are traveling to Poipu this summer (staying at the Sheraton). We both want to learn how to surf at Poipu Beach and are wondering what the average wave height is during mid-July. Also, what is a good surf school in Poipu Beach to go to?

Hello. We are planning on visiting Kauai in either beginning January or end of March. My teenagers, who are good intermediate surfers, would like to be able to surf while we adults want to stay where the weather will be good (less chances of rain) and be able to experience other aspects of the island such as hiking, etc. Which of those 2 times would you recommend based on this, and would part of the island would be most advisable to stay on? In general, where would you recommend surfing for intermediate surfers? Thank you!

Hi, we are coming to Kauai in April 2012, previously been to Maui but the accommodation is so expensive that we have decided to try Kauai this time.
I have found a fabulous looking condo at the Koloa Landing resort (previously stayed at the Wailea Beach Villas on Maui) but i am concerned about the trade winds. Will we be able to sit out on the Lanai in April and sunbathe? No point booking a fab condo with a sea view if the winds make it impossible to sit outside!
Please give me your opinion, would i be best to stay on the North Shore in April?

Jul 12, 2011 7:05AM
Donna - tradewinds are the best part of the islands. Enjoy.

Hi. I was wondering if Poipu is easy to get to if you are driving from the cruise port of Nawili Wila? I have heard great things about this beach, that is good for children. Thanks!

Hi! Great Site! I will use this when I arrive in September. I am staying at Whalers Cove cause the snorkeling was so good right out front. I am experienced at open ocean snorkeling, last February I was there and it was awesome. Saw a whale right in the cove! How is the surf generally in September?

Hi - we are currently in the process of planning our honeymoon to Hawaii. We are planning on flying on on March 26, and returning home on April 6. We are planning on spending 5-6 days in Kauai during this time (remaining 5-6 days in Maui). What area in Kauai has the best weather? We are leaning towards Poipu...
Nov 22, 2011 12:48PM
We are going to Kauai in January and february. Where are the best places to snorkel during that time? thanks
Nov 28, 2011 6:22PM
Read posts for the last number of years. Other than sharks and seals nobody has really mentioned what they see at Poipu. What kinds of fish do you see? Also, where in Poipu is the best place to snorkel? In front of the Sheraton there are no snorkellers yet people say that they snorkel there. Where exactly do they recommend?
Jan 05, 2012 2:01PM
Spending month of Feb. in Poipu, starting to pack and wondering if we need wetsuits for snorkeling. Thanks.
Jan 22, 2012 2:20PM
Hi there...i googled yoga at poipu and this site came up...can you tell me where i could find a yoga class (for beginners...) thank you!!

I know it is a matter of taste, but this beach is simply too crowded for my choice of beaches. With all the amazing options available on Kauai, why this beach is so popular is beyond me; the swimming is only OK, there are half a dozen better snorkeling options, and it has become like a Little Maui: the spot where the beautiful people come to show off. At least that is my impression. Not to mention that the parking lot is always crowded and that means the beach is packed, often.
Mar 01, 2012 9:09AM
Poipu is for bodyboarding not for surfing south is good for powerful waves and barrels not for surfing
Mar 12, 2012 7:36AM
is bodysurfing better at poipu beach park or an brennikes?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 13, 2012 2:51AM
Brenneke's is better bodysurfing. Poipu beach is almost all reef.
Mar 24, 2012 12:12PM
i am going to poipu beach April 24-30. is there a chance i will get sun? i really want sun! does it rain a lot in april? should i expect it to be cold?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 25, 2012 7:07PM
Lat - the water never gets cold. Sometimes there is some wind-chill. The likelihood of sun is high in April, so is the likelihood of passing showers. That's what makes Kauai so lush and beautiful.

Hi!
My wife and I are coming to Kauai on 5/1/12 for a week. At this time of the year which beaches are the best for snorkeling?
I find this web site very informative.
Great Job!

POIPU Beach Park is really beautiful place for vacations. I went there last week with my friends. I actually enjoyed my weekend.

We are going to be in Poipu next March and want to reserve a pavilion in the park for a 50th Anniversary celebration. How far in advance can we make this reservation? Mahalo for your help.

Hi there! Myself and some girlfriends are going on vacation in January, hopefully to Kauai - we want to learn to surf - two out of the four of us has some decent surf experience. We also really want SUN!!!! (we are from vancouver...). Any recommendations of a good spot for surf and sun in January? Thanks!!
Jan 02, 2013 1:55PM
Can I swim from Poipu
beach to the harbor? The distance is easy and i will have fins and a snorkel as a "cheat" but wonder how close to shore I need to be to avoid currents that may take me out, but not too close so the surf puts me on the rocks.
thank you!
Jan 02, 2013 1:59PM
What is your favorite 6-12 mi hike in Waimea or near Poipu?
thank you!!
Jan 06, 2013 9:56AM
This is a very helpful site. I have been on Kauai for about a week now and this site has helped me plan my beach days. Thanks for all the great information.
Jan 08, 2013 2:19PM
If we go to Poipu Beach area, are there any chairs that can be used by the public? Or a hotel nearby where they allow usage of beach chairs by those who are not staying at the property?

We are staying at the Regency Poipu Kai Resort. I forgot to ask in my last question wheter or not all beaches in Kauai are public access. For instance, Shipwreck Beach in fron of the Hyatt?
What is the walkind distance from Regency to each of Poipu Beach State Park and Shipwreck? Can you walk from one beach area to the other? Thank you
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 18, 2013 7:50AM
Lucy - all beaches in Hawaii are required to have public access up to the high water mark.
Mar 13, 2013 9:43AM
I will be traveling with my 8 month old baby and i was wondering if there are a lot of mosquitoes towards the end of August/beginning of September.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 18, 2013 8:58AM
Kim - there can be mosquitos any time of year. It depends on the amount of rain, standing water, where you go. Some people are very sensitive to mosquitos, but for most it's a non-issue. They are not as voracious as summer mosquitos on the mainland.

Hi Tsila - all of this information has been covered already on the site in each beach profile and the seasonal surf trends.
Jan 03, 2015 1:26PM
Kauai explorer staff, kudos for a great site and keep up the good work. Surfed Waiohai at dawn today based on your forecast and tide info (and the weather was calm) so thanks, conditions were pretty nice!

I have booked a condo on Poipoi side in January of 2016 and we are debating if this is a good time of year for scuba and swimming and beach?
Jan 19, 2016 11:33AM
Our cruise ship will stop at Kauai for one day and we would like to spend a day at Poipu Beach for swimming and walking.
Is there a bus between cruise terminal and Poipu beach? and if so, what is the bus name/number?
Thank you in advanced for your time.
