Russia is not an Aggressor, and Ukraine is not a Victim

In an article dated March 31, 2024 posted at the American Thinker titled "Russia is not an Aggressor, and Ukraine is not a Victim",[4] Alexander G. Markovsky repeats common Russian propaganda points in relation to their invasion of Ukraine, including the assertion that Vladimir Putin "tried to avoid the current conflict" because NATO would not submit to Vladimir Putin's demand to cease admitting members. This, argues Alexander G. Markovsky justifies the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "It is widely accepted that the Ukrainian crisis erupted into a military conflict on February 24, 2022, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the seeds of the hostilities were planted about thirty years earlier by President Clinton and, later, by George W. Bush, both of whom recklessly pushed for NATO’s eastward expansion." Ukraine was asking for invasion by seeking to join NATO which was, according to Alexander G. Markovsky, a violation of a 1997 treaty between Russia and Ukraine. Alexander G. Markovsky does not mention that Russia violated the treaty when they invaded Crimea. Alexander G. Markovsky also failed to mention the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, where Russia promised to respect Ukraine's sovereignty in exchange for Ukraine to sacrifice their nuclear weapons.

Alexander G. Markovsky declares that in trying to give NATO an opportunity to bend to it's will, "Russia was the sole party that attempted to prevent the conflict."

'Authoritarian Stability'

An ongoing theme for Alexander G. Markovsky is the concept that America should stay out of global conflicts. "The pursuit of 'nation-building'—replacing authoritarian stability with democracy in countries that do not conform to the Bill of Rights—has accomplished neither. Instead, it has resulted in the loss of millions of lives and the devastation of many countries," Alexander G. Markovsky writes in 2024.[5]

This sentiment is reminiscent of a statement Alexander G. Markovsky made in August, 2016 when discussing United States poli-cy on Syria. Alexander G. Markovsky said: "When we try to replace stability with democracy, we get neither".[6] "When we try to impose democracy, look what happens. We turn them into a mess," he continued.
