Country Overview

The West African nation of Guinea is bordered to the north by Guinea Bissau, Senegal, and Mali, and to the south by Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire. In 2022, the country’s population was about 13.5 million people.

Twelve years after Guinea held its first multiparty elections in 2010 following decades of autocratic rule and recently after the military coup of September 2021, the country is again facing a decisive transition period, which will determine its return to democratic rule and long sought stability.

Guinea enjoys sizeable endowments of natural resources, energy opportunities, and arable land.

The agriculture sector is the country's largest employer and plays a key role in poverty reduction and rural development, providing income for 57 percent of rural households, and employment for 52 percent of the labor force.

In addition to this sector, natural resources, especially mining and hydropower, could generate substantial income. The processing industries and services are economic assets for Guinea as well. The country is estimated to have the largest reserves of bauxite in the world and is one of the largest producers of the mineral. Iron Ore, gold and diamond mining also represent key markets for the country.

To support the return of sustainable democratic order and more representative and accountable government in Guinea, USAID is working with the transitional government to build an inclusive democratic culture, adherence to the rule-of-law, and corresponding institutional skills and resources  to ensure transparent, peaceful, and legitimate electoral and political processes. USAID also works to strengthen Guinea’s health system at the community level for improved service delivery, and to support economic growth by helping to improve agricultural productivity. Our programs promote gender equality across  health services, agriculture, employment– especially for youth–, and decision-making opportunities.
