Harsh Raman holds a BSc (Agriculture) and MSc (Agriculture) from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, (India) and PhD from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana (India) in the area of plant biotechnology. He joined NSW Agriculture (now NSW Department of Primary Industries) in 1996 and undertook research projects focused on prebreeding in cereals. Currently, he is involved in canola genetics and molecular marker research at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute.

Several species belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae were isolated from grapevine (Vitis vinifera)... more Several species belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae were isolated from grapevine (Vitis vinifera) tissue other than wood during a survey of two vineyards planted to cultivars 'Chardonnay' and 'Shiraz' in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia over the 2007/08 and 2008/09 growing seasons. A total of 188 isolates corresponding to nine different species of Diplodia, Dothiorella and Neofusicoccum anamorphs were isolated from dormant buds, flowers, pea-sized berries and mature berries prior to harvest in addition to 142 isolates from the trunks of the same vines. Furthermore, the occurrence of Dothiorella viticola, Diplodia mutila and Neofusicoccum australe is reported here for the first time from grapevines in the Hunter Valley. These findings may provide important information for the management and spread of Botryosphaeriaceae in vineyards where they are considered serious wood-invading pathogens. Climate change and the accompanying impacts of global warming such as with rising temperatures an... more Climate change and the accompanying impacts of global warming such as with rising temperatures and water shortages at crucial plant development stages poses a great challenge to the productivity and profitability of agricultural crops. In order to improve the resilience of canola to climate change, an integrated approach for breeding climate-smart varieties is required. Although the majority of the current breeding targets for canola improvement programs remain largely unchanged, emerging climate uncertainties reinforced the development of high yielding resilient varieties for tolerance to excessive drought, frost, heat, and waterlogging. Ecological, evolutionary adaptation, and selective breeding processes have provided a range of natural variation in ‘climate smart traits’ in canola and its closely related species. In this review, we focus on the extent of natural variation in various adaptation and productivity traits, and recent genetic and genomic innovations to confront climate uncertainties. Further understanding of the genetic determinants underlying resilience traits, increasing genetic diversity by creating desired mutations, and the deployment of prediction based breeding methods will accelerate the development of climate smart varieties for improving productivity and profitability of canola.

Despite the identification of several Avr effectors and R (race-specific) genes, specific interactions between Avr-R genes are not yet fully understood in the Brassica napus–L. maculans pathosystem. In this study, we investigated the genetic basis of resistance in an F2:3 population derived from Australian canola varieties CB-Telfer (Rlm4)/ATR-Cobbler (Rlm4) using a single-spore isolate of L. maculans, PHW1223. A genetic linkage map of the CB-Telfer/ATR-Cobbler population was constructed using 7,932 genotyping-by-sequencing-based DArTseq markers and subsequently utilized for linkage and haplotype analyses. Genetic linkage between DArTseq markers and resistance to PHW1223 isolate was also validated using the B. napus 60K Illumina Infinium array.
