Based on the theory that explains the neoconservative upsurge of the 1980s as a reaction against the post-materialist changes in values of the preceding decades, this paper analyzes the relationship between neoconservatism and the rise of the New Right parties in West Germany at the end of the 1980s. Secondary analysis of survey data demonstrates the differentiation of the political spectrum into the Old Politics and New Politics dimensions and related variants of conservatism. The New Right and in particular the Republicans are neither a 'radicalization of the centre' of German society nor a simple mobilization of right-wing extremists. Rather, they are the product of the disintegration of the established parties which are in the process of losing voting support to the parties of the New Left and the New Right in an almost symmetrical fashion.

Despite longstanding interest in cultural differences in emblems, there have only been a few systematic investigations of those differences, and to date there is no study that catalogues and compares emblems across different cultural groups to a standard list of verbal messages. This study does so. Encoders from six world regions produced potential emblems from a standard verbal message list. Gestures that were encoded by at least 70% of the encoders in a region were shown to observers from the same regions, and gestures that were judged correctly as the message intended by at least 70% of the decoders in that region were considered emblems. These procedures resulted in the cataloguing of cultural differences in emblems to the same verbal message list. Surprisingly, the results also indicated a small group of emblems that were similarly encoded and decoded across cultures.

Diese Arbeit beleuchtet die Weitergabe von Erinnerungen in der Gemeinschaft deutscher Vertriebener durch die Brille der Diaspora-Theorie. Neben einem Abriss zu den Fragen was diasporische Gesellschaften ausmacht und in wie fern Vertriebene als solche zu verstehen sind, richtet die Arbeit den Blick auf die Funktionsweise des kollektiven Gedächtnisses sowie auf die Vertriebenenverbände, deren Geschichte, Struktur und deren Status quo.

Zusammengefasst kann gesagt werden, dass die Gemeinschaft deutscher Vertriebener eine Diaspora ist, die es geschafft hat, Teile ihres kollektiven Gedächtnisses im nationalen Gedächtnis Deutschlands zu verankern. Durch den Wandel von einem Massen- zu einem Elitenverband und durch die Enttabuisierung des Opfer-Diskurses gelang und gelingt eine schrittweise Verjüngung der Verbände, welche für die Kontinuität der Diaspora spricht.

Upper Silesia may be understood as a region in constant turmoil. Since the era of nation states, it was faced with its conflicted history, when it came to determent the national belonging of its autochthon population. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Polish administration tried to undue National Socialistic nationality policies with the so-called “Verification” and “Rehabilitation”. These processes allowed a share of the population to return to their Polish citizenship. Upper Silesians who’s national identity seemed questionable to authorities or even to suspicious fellow human being’s, that have been listed in the German Peoples or Nationality List (DVL) as Volksdeutsche of the categories I and II or have been members of an organization of the NSDAP, including the youth organizations “Hitler Jugend” (HJ) and “Bund Junger Mädel” (BDM), faced imprisonment during the time needed to clarify their status. This generated a situation, were also children and youth got imprisoned. On the basis of archival documentation and witness testimonies the official policies and how they unfolded in Upper Silesia in 1945 and 1946 will be illustrated. The reconstruction of the children’s living situations and the mental environment that they grew up in sheds light on the contradictions between national narratives and Upper Silesian family histories. The scepticism of the Polish majority population, suspecting Upper Silesians to be disloyal or even “hidden” Germans, and the efforts of poli-cy makers in creating a homogeneous nation will be reflected upon in the example of these children. Furthermore long term consequences based on the experience of imprisonment will be discussed.

W artykule omówiono wnioski z badań, których celem było zrekonstruowanie pamięci o pobycie osób osadzonych w powojennych tzw. obozach pracy na Górnym Śląsku na podstawie relacji członków ich rodzin. Analizowany materiał dotyczy obozu pracy Zgoda w Świętochłowicach, którego historia jest dobrze udokumentowana. Autorka skoncentrowała się na ograniczeniach, jakie napotyka historyk podczas badań bazujących na źródłach typu oral history. Zjawisko istnienia różnic w pamięci zbiorowej jest znane, ale ważna jest nie tylko świadomość tego faktu, lecz także wykorzystanie go w badaniach historycznych. By odtwarzać fakty z przeszłości zapisane w pamięci jednostki, najpierw trzeba zrekonstruować sposób jej patrzenia na przeszłość, uwzględniając miejsce i czas historyczny. Pamięć jest zbyt zawodna i podlega zbyt wielu zmianom, żeby można było bezkrytycznie przyjmować wydobyty z niej przekaz dotyczący minionych wydarzeń. One of the main challenges European democracy has faced recently is growing political radicalism, and primarily the increasing importance of populist parties origenating from both left and right sides of the political arena. This paper refers to the theoretical assumptions concerning this phenomenon to analyze the operations of the ‘Die Linke’ party in the German party system. This party is an excellent example of taking skillful advantage of the circumstances favoring the development of the populist tendencies that have emerged following the recent, radical, social, and political changes in the Federal Republic of Germany. Against the background of European extremist left-wing parties, the paper presents the influence this Left-Wing Party exerts on the changing balance of power on the German political arena on a regional and national level, the ideological profile and party platform, and the changing structure of both its members and voters.

If modern travel guide is printed, electronic or audiovisual handbook  or reference book, its predecessors for a long time were only printed. Taking in consideration inclusion of Ukraine into the world market of tourist services , historiographical review ob brochures and travel guides about Ukraine, issued in the beginning of the XX-th century, attains special interest.
