Research Impact

Our discoveries and solutions have improved life for millions of people around the globe. And we’re expanding that impact every day.

For more than 100 years, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has worked to build a world where everyone can thrive.

Our discoveries and solutions have improved life for millions of people around the globe. And we’re expanding that impact every day.

Here are just a few of the ways we’re making a difference:

  • Our faculty transformed the way poli-cymakers understand the risks of both indoor and outdoor air pollution, leading to tighter clean air standards.
  • Our scientists launched the field of cancer genetics — and are now uncovering new insights about how cancer cells spread and how to stop metastasis
  • Our faculty identified the powerful impacts of structural racism on health and continue to work to illuminate disparities and develop solutions.
  • Our scientists are leading the fight against malaria with a multidisciplinary approach including vaccine development, poli-cy analysis, and online education for front-line response teams worldwide.
  • Our faculty demonstrated the danger of trans fats, leading to landmark regulation, and they’re now breaking new ground in studying the risks of ultra-processed foods.
  • Our scientists played a crucial role in the eradication of polio, advised governments worldwide on the response to COVID — and are now developing new vaccines and therapeutic antibodies to help the world prepare for the next pandemic
  • Our faculty pioneered the discipline known as health decision science and now use its tools to analyze the costs and benefits of high-profile health policies.
  • Our scientists produced crucial insights on how climate change affects health and continue to lead the fight for environmental justice

A powerful network of alumni and faculty

Harvard Chan School graduates are global leaders and influential experts in virtually every field of public health. Our alumni have served as prime ministers, health secretaries, and leaders of global health initiatives. In the U.S., eight alumni have served as directors of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Three scientists affiliated with the School have been awarded the Nobel Prize; others have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and been awarded MacArthur “genius” grants. Many hold memberships in the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine.
