U.S. Historical Climatology Network-Modernization (USHCN-M) Data

Overview

Description

The USHCN is a designated subset of the NWS Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) Network. The USHCN sites having been selected according to their spatial coverage, record length, data completeness, and historical stability. The USHCN, therefore, consists primarily of long-term COOP stations whose monthly temperature records have been adjusted for systematic, nonclimatic changes that bias temperature trends.

MADIS has been collecting data from this NOAA Port data set since April 16, 2010 via the SBN. MADIS ingest data from USHCN sites in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. NWS has quit funding this effort so there may be very little data from this source going forward.

Geographic Coverage

Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.

Data Schedule

All stations report five minute data once per hour and are available between 40 minnutes and 50 minutes after the top of the hour.

MADIS stores the data starting at the top of the hour and ending 59 minutes after the hour (e.g., the 0000 file covers 0000 - 0059).

Data that arrive after 2 hours following the time of the observation are processed in a "data recovery" mode, where once a day batch processing is performed to reprocess data that are 35 days, 7 days, and 1 day old. These data are available with all communications methods supported by MADIS except for ldm.

Volume

Typical daily volume for all MADIS datasets can be seen here.

Restrictions

No restrictions. All observations are publicly accessible.
