@noaa Program Office
Science serving America's coasts since 1966

Warmest wishes for a great holiday season! 🌴☀️

In August, #SeaGrant staff from around the country gathered in Savannah, Georgia to collaborate & learn as part of the biennial Sea Grant Week.
NOAA is pleased to announce that the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has been selected to receive $2.7 million in funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. Through a collaboration with NOAA’s National Ocean Service and National Sea Grant Office, the funding will support efforts over the next four years to expand ANTHC’s work addressing climate change impacts on Alaska Native communities.

This funding will support Tribal-led climate adaptation strategies, boost technical assistance for all 229 Alaska Native tribes and strengthen the capacity to address rising waters, flooding and permafrost degradation.

ANTHC’s strong community connections and partnership with NOAA will help develop sustainable solutions for these challenges. This initiative marks a key step towards enhancing climate resilience for Alaska Native communities.

Sea levels are rising faster in American Samoa than the global average, partly due to land subsidence, or the gradual sinking of land, caused by a 2009 earthquake and tsunami. This combination means higher tides, more powerful waves and a coastline that’s increasingly vulnerable to flooding.

A recent study completed by @Hawaii_Sea_Grant used observational data and modeling to show that these rising seas make every wave hit harder, putting coastal roads, homes and infrastructure at greater risk. The earthquake’s effects still impact American Samoa today, with wave energy reaching further inland and the possibility of more frequent floods on the horizon.

By better understanding these threats, Sea Grant helps communities prepare for and adapt to changing conditions, building a stronger, safer coast for future generations.

@noaa This year, the conclusion of the marine debris removal season in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument is a big deal. Why? It resulted in the largest amount of marine debris removed from the site in a mission season since NOAA began removal efforts in 1996.

Through a partnership with the NOAA Marine Debris Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and other partners, a team of 16 from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project removed 298,180 pounds of marine debris from the monument during three missions from April to October 2024.

The removed marine debris includes 191,860 pounds of derelict fishing nets, 4,600 pounds of abandoned and derelict vessels and 101,720 pounds of plastic and other debris. The team also released four Hawaiian green sea turtles entangled in derelict fishing nets.

🎉🦞 It’s National Lobster Day and we’re spotlighting a fascinating study from California Sea Grant examining how environmental changes impact spiny lobsters.

From their specialized sensory systems to their crucial role in marine ecosystems, this study explores how spiny lobsters adapt to environmental stressors like temperature shifts 🌡️ and habitat changes 🏝️. Studies like this help scientists gain crucial insights into lobster behavior and population dynamics: bit.ly/CASG-Spiny-Lobster

From net to table!

Seafood sold directly from fishers to consumers is often fresher and more sustainable —supporting local businesses and encouraging a connection with our food sources. 🐟

However, many fishers face legal hurdles like complicated permits and licensing. The National Sea Grant Law Center explored legal obstacles, including permitting and licensing requirements, for fishers in 30 coastal states.
